Byron Peyster (Washington, D.C./Maret) singled home junior catcher
Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) with one out in the bottom of the 10
th inning to lift the Washington and Lee baseball team to a 4-3 victory over Stevenson in its 2009 home-opener at Cap'n Dick Smith Field on Thursday afternoon.
The Generals (5-1) fell behind, 1-0, in the first inning when Stevenson's (3-2) Max Eckert (Hyattsville, Md./Perkiomen Prep) homered off of W&L's
Andrew Henderson (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy).
The Generals scored three runs in the fourth inning with the help of three Mustangs miscues. Peyster forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk, junior first baseman
Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford, Conn./Taft School) scored on an error and junior third baseman
Jim Plantholt (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) also scored an unearned run for W&L.
After the first-inning homerun, Henderson allowed just one hit over the next six innings, until Stevenson scored twice in the top of the eighth to knot the game at 3-3.
Lewis led off the 10
th with a double and advanced to third on a fly-out by Serenbetz. The Mustangs intentionally walked Plantholt to set up a double play and Peyster followed with his game-winning single.
Lewis was 2-for-5 on the day with two runs scored, while Peyster was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Henderson earned a no-decision after allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits. He struck out two and did not walk a batter in eight innings of work. Plantholt came on in relief and earned the win. He did not give up a run and allowed two hits with one strikeout in two innings.
Washington and Lee returns to action with a double header against Emory & Henry on Saturday. Game one is set to begin 12:00 pm in Emory, Va.
