LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior forward Kara Nadeau (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe with six seconds remaining to lift the Washington and Lee women's basketball team to a 67-66 victory over Randolph-Macon on Sunday afternoon at the Warner Center.
With the win, the Generals (2-5, 2-1) snapped a 15-game losing streak to the Yellow Jackets (4-4, 2-2). W&L's last victory in the series was a 76-71 double-overtime triumph on Dec. 1, 2001 in Lexington, Va.
The Generals jumped out to an early 16-6 lead at 12:08 and pushed their advantage to as many as 18 points in the first half before entering the break with a 16-point cushion (39-23). W&L held R-MC to 23.1 percent first-half shooting on 6-of-26 from the floor.
The Yellow Jackets began chipping away at the Generals' half-time advantage and sliced it to an eight-point game (48-40) at 12:08. However, W&L then extended its lead back to as many as 12 points with five minutes remaining (64-52). R-MC then outscored the Generals 14-2 down the stretch to tie the game at 66-66 with 47 seconds remaining. Senior guard Amanda Hiltunen (Glen Allen, Va./Hermitage) then fouled Nadeau with six seconds showing. Nadeau connected on the first foul shot and missed the second, but an offensive rebound by senior guard Bethany Ridenhour (Westwood, N.J./Holy Angels) would secure the victory.
W&L was paced by first-year guard Meghan Ingram's (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) 21 points and a game-high seven assists. Sophomore center Felice Herman (Fairfield, Pa./Delone Catholic) tallied 14 points and five rebounds, while first-year guard Rebecca Bolton (Pittsboro, N.C./Chatham Central) recorded her first-ever double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Nadeau chipped in nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
R-MC was led by junior center Molly Ariail's (York, Pa./York Suburban) game-high 24 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. Hiltunen added 14 points and a team-high four steals. With Ariail's 24 points, she surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for her career.
The Generals return to the hardwood on Tuesday as they travel to Virginia Wesleyan for a 7:00 pm contest.
