Generals Swept by Blue Jays

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Both the Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams were defeated in a dual meet against Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon in Baltimore, Md. The 13th-ranked W&L men fell to the fifth-ranked Blue Jays, 143-119, while the women were defeated by the sixth-ranked JHU squad, 156-97.

Senior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) had a stellar meet for the W&L men (11-2), winning three individual events on the day. He touched first in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.26, won the 500 free with a time of 4:50.02 and also emerged with a win in the 200 IM (1:59.60).

Additionally, junior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kansas/Shawnee) won the 50 free (22.16) and led off the winning 200 free relay team that finished in 1:26.82. He was joined on the team by first-year Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery), senior Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./George Walton) and junior Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy).

For the W&L women (9-6), first-year Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York) led the way with a first-place finish in the 100 fly (1:03.38), while also competing on the winning 200 free relay squad that finished in 1:43.96. Senior Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) led off the relay and was joined by Fredericks and juniors Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School) and Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg).

Senior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) won the 100 back (1:01.55), while first-year Katie Salvati (Roselle Park, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) touched first in the 400 IM (4:56.59).

The Washington and Lee men will return to action on Feb. 11-14 as they compete in the Bluegrass Mountain Championships held in Charlotte, N.C. The women return to the pool on Feb. 13-15 at the ODAC Championships held at Radford University.
