LEXINGTON, Va. - Senior guard
Bethany Ridenhour (Westwood, N.J./Holy Angels) tied a season high with 15 points in leading Washington and Lee to a 72-55 victory over Southern Virginia in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday evening at the Warner Center.
The Generals (8-8) connected on 47.8 percent shooting from behind the arc (11-23), one three-pointer shy of tying the school record for threes made in a game.
The opening minutes were tightly contested until W&L went on a 12-2 run midway through the first half to take a 28-12 edge at 4:43 en route to a 42-19 cushion at the break. The Generals shot 58.3 percent from distance (7-12) and held a 23-13 advantage on the boards in the first stanza.
Southern Virginia immediately began chipping away at Washington and Lee's advantage to start the second period using a 12-4 run to cut it to a 49-31 contest at 13:52. However, the Generals pushed back out to a 25-point lead (68-43) at the 5:26 mark in cruising to their fifth-straight win over the Knights.
Ridenhour was joined in double-digits by senior forward
Kara Nadeau (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) and first-year guard
Kari Ann Pfannenstein (Littletown, Colo./Heritage), who totaled 13 points apiece. Sophomore center
Felice Herman (Fairfield, Pa./Delone Catholic) and first-year guard Megan Ingram (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) both chipped in eight points. First-year guard Rebecca Bolton (Pittsboro, N.C./Chatham) scored seven points and grabbed a team-best eight boards.
SVU (11-8) was paced by junior guard Tricia Dixon's (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) game-high 22 points. First-year forward Kezia Ford (Great Falls, Mont./Great Falls) added 14 markers, while first-year forward Amanda Prestwich (Highland, Utah/Lone Park) totaled nine points and nine rebounds.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday as it travels to Guilford for a 7:00 pm contest.
