LEXINGTON, Va. – Roanoke outscored Washington and Lee 10-2 over the game's final 2:46 to eke out a 71-68 victory over the Generals in ODAC women's basketball action on Friday evening at the Warner Center.
The Maroons (10-2, 6-2) used a 9-2 run midway through the second half to take a six-point lead (48-42) at 10:41. However, W&L (5-7, 5-3) responded with an 11-0 run of its own to make it a 53-48 game at 7:52. RC then began chipping away at the Generals advantage and used the aforementioned run to secure the one-point victory.
The first half was tightly contested and featured 11 lead changes and four ties, as W&L entered the break with a slim 34-33 advantage. The Generals shot an even 50 percent (14-28) from the field, while the Maroons shot 48.1 percent (13-27) from the floor in the first stanza.
Junior guard Jaleesa Osborne (Ordinary, Va./Gloucester) led four Maroons in double-digits as she totaled 15 points and a game-high six assists. Sophomore center Jordan Gholson (Louisa, Va./Louisa County) registered 13 points, while junior guard Caitlyn Long (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) added 12 markers. Senior center Marcy Conner (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) chipped in 10 points and grabbed five boards.
W&L was paced by sophomore center Felice Herman (Fairfield, Pa./Delone Catholic), who tallied 16 points and six rebounds before fouling out with 1:05 left in the game. First-year forward Rebecca Bolton (Pittsboro, N.C./Chatham Central) registered 15 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard Bethany Ridenhour (Westwood, N.J./Holy Angels) recorded 13 points and six boards.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Bridgewater for a 3:00 pm game.
