HARRISONBURG, Va. – Senior guard Bethany Ridenhour (Westwood, N.J./Holy Angels) hit a three-pointer in the final second to give Washington and Lee a 71-69 victory over Eastern Mennonite in ODAC women's basketball action on Tuesday evening at Yoder Arena.
The Royals (10-3, 5-3) led by as many as nine points (47-38) in the second half, but the Generals (5-6, 5-2) chipped away at the lead, eventually tying the game at 68-68 with 20 seconds remaining on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Allie Long (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings). EMU re-took the lead with nine seconds remaining as Melissa Lewis was fouled and hit the first free throw. However, her second shot missed and was rebounded by first-year forward Rebecca Bolton (Pittsboro, N.C./Chatham Central), who tossed an outlet pass to Long, who in turn fed Ridenhour for the game-winner. It was W&L's first lead since 24-23 with 6:22 remaining in the first half.
The Generals shot 51.8 percent (29-56) from the floor and committed just 11 turnovers in the contest. However, EMU outscored W&L 19-6 at the foul line and held a 38-24 advantage on the boards.
Sophomore center Felice Herman (Fairfield, Pa./Delone Catholic) led the Generals with a career-high 20 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the floor. She also grabbed seven rebounds. Bolton tallied 14 points and tied a school-record with 11 assists, while first-year guard Meghan Ingram (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) totaled 15 points. Ridenhour chipped in eight points.
Eastern Mennonite was paced by Danielle Scott's 16 points and eight rebounds. Ebony Dennis has 11 points and 11 boards, while Brittany Snyder had 17 points.
