W&L Field Hockey Falls to Lynchburg, 2-1

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The W&L field hockey team built a 1-0 advantage by halftime, but could not hold it as Lynchburg rallied in the second half with two unanswered goals to knock off the Generals, 2-1.

Junior forward Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John's) gave the Generals a 1-0 lead at the 13:16 mark when she was able to put a ball past Lynchburg's Sarah Cates (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine). Despite Lynchburg's 15-5 advantage in shots in the first half, the score remained 1-0 in favor of W&L at the break.

LC got on the board at 37:28, when junior forward Allie Weir (Richmond, Va./James River) scored her 11th goal of the season off an assist from junior midfielder Signey Milks (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester). The Hornets scored the game-winner at the 56:17 mark off the stick of sophomore midfielder Jennie Weir (Richmond, Va./James River). Sophomore midfielder Caitlin Gibb (North East, Md./Rising Sun) assisted on the game-winner.

Junior goalkeeper Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) kept the Generals in the game as she made eight saves on the day. The Hornets recorded 23 shots, to just five for W&L. Sophomore midfielder Emily Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) recorded a defensive save for the Generals.

W&L returns to the field on Sunday when its hosts St. Mary's (Md.) in a 1:00 pm game.
