LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior guard Rahshann Lewter (Hampton, Va./Hampton) led four Builders in double figures with 22 points as Newport News Apprentice defeated Washington and Lee, 74-59, in women's basketball action on Tuesday evening at the Warner Center.
The Generals (1-5) jumped out to an early 18-8 lead at 14:52. However, the Builders responded with a 13-2 run to take their first lead of the game, 21-20, at 8:57. The remaining minutes of the half featured four ties and four lead changes en route to a 33-33 halftime score.
Apprentice (4-8) opened the second period on a 9-2 spurt to take a 42-35 lead at 14:37. W&L then chipped away at the Builders' advantage and pulled ahead, 47-46, on a three-pointer by first-year guard Meghan Ingram (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) at 11:11. However, a three-pointer by first-year guard Tamara Davis (Hampton, Va./Hampton) gave NNA a 51-49 advantage and the Builders never looked back as they outscored W&L 25-11 in the remaining minutes to seal the victory.
The Builders were led by Lewter's 22 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while sophomore forward Valleri West (Hampton, Va./Phoebus) tallied 15 points and nine rebounds. Junior center Shemeka Warren (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) recorded 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds and senior guard Upenda Morton (Mechanisville, Va./Lee Davis) chipped in 11 points.
The Generals were paced by Ingram's career-high 31 points and five assists, while senior forward Kara Nadeau (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) added 12 points, six rebounds and two steals. Sophomore center Felice Herman (Fairfield, Pa./Delone Catholic) recorded six points and a team-high eight rebounds.
W&L returns to action on Sunday when it hosts ODAC-foe Randolph-Macon for a 3:00 pm contest.
