CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Tim Kohlrus' 26-foot three-pointer gave Washington College a 74-73 lead with 0.6 seconds remaining. Following a discussion with the officials, the clock was adjusted to 3.6 seconds, just enough time for W&L senior guard Chris McHugh (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) to hit a 28-footer at the buzzer to give W&L a 76-74 win on Saturday afternoon.
Senior forward Kirk Jones had (Maple Glen, Pa./Germantown Acad.) had hit an off-balance shot in the lane to give W&L a 73-71 lead before Kohlrus hit his three.
The Generals (2-2) used a 13-2 run to open the second half and turn a three-point deficit (37-34) into an eight-point advantage (47-39) with 13:55 remaining before the Shoremen came storming back.
Washington College (0-1) made a run when Shoremen first-year Sal Schittino scored six-straight points to cut W&L's lead to two with 1:32 remaining and Alan Klines nailed a three to tie the game at 69 with 52 seconds remaining to set up the last-second heroics.
Senior forward Ben Heller (Houston, Texas/Lamar) led the Generals with a career-high 16 points while junior forward Zac White (Baltimore, Md./Park School) added 14 points, six rebounds and six blocks and classmate Ben Goetsch (Timonium, Md./Gilman) chipped in 15 points and five rebounds.
W&L is in action on Tuesday when travels to Delaware Valley for a 7:00 pm contest.
