W&L Swimming Teams Compete at Centre Double Dual

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The W&L men's and women's swim teams were in action on Saturday afternoon, taking on Centre and DePauw in a meet held on the campus of the University of Louisville. The men came away with a pair of victories, while the women came up just short.

The men's team posted a 192-92 win over Centre and defeated DePauw 155-139 to improve to 4-0 early in the season. The W&L women fell 155-116 to Centre and 166-112 to DePauw.

Senior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) headlined the event winners for the Generals as he notched three wins on the day. Crook captured the 200 free (1:43.94), the 500 free (4:53.65) and the 200 IM (1:56.44).

Joining Crook on the podium, was a quartet of first-years as Brad Harder (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) won the 100 back (54.72) Ryan Hartman (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) took the 200 fly (1:58.57), Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) captured the 100 fly (52.96) and Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) captured the 200 back in 1:58.13.

Junior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee South) also won for the Generals, taking the 50 free in 22.24.

Senior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School), the reigning ODAC Swimmer of the Year, led the W&L women's team as she took the 200 back in 2:13.58 and placed second in the 100 back with a time of 2:13.58. First-year Lauren Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Preparatory) was a winner in the 500 free (5:20.30) and took second in the 1000 free (11:03.82). Junior Lynn Bazzell (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett) added a second-place finish in the 200 breast with a time of 3:32.02.

But, it was first-year Kate Gibbs (Midothian, Va./Clover Hill) who provided the real highlight for the women's team. Gibbs set a new Adapted American Swimming Record in the S9 classification of the 200 fly for a single-arm amputee as she notched a time of 2:31.29.

The women's swim team returns to the pool on Friday when it hosts Randolph-Macon in an ODAC meet, while the men are off until the Emory Invitational on November 15.
