Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee senior running back
Stuart Sitterson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) tallied 323 all-purpose
yards and one touchdown, but it was not enough as the Generals
dropped their third-straight game with a 34-27 loss to Guilford on
Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Generals (4-4, 1-3) pulled even with the Quakers (27-27) at the
11:41 mark of the fourth quarter on a 27-yard field goal by
sophomore placekicker Martin Prichard (Paris, Ky./Asheville
School). However, Guilford (4-3, 1-2) took the lead back with 9:06
remaining as sophomore running back Justin Parker (Greensboro,
N.C./Southern Guilford) scored on a 7-yard touchdown run for a
34-27 lead.
Washington and Lee drove to the Guilford 4-yardline with 5:16 left
in the game, but first-year quarterback Charlie Westfal (New
Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) was stopped stort on a 4th-and-1 play and
the Quakers ran out the final minutes to preserve their first ODAC
win of the season.
Guilford jumped out to a 14-7 advantage early on after a pair of
touchdown passes from senior quarterback Josh Vogelbach (North Fort
Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot) to senior wide receiver Kevin Vaughn (Mt.
Airy, N.C./East Surry). However, the Generals tied the score at
14-14 on a 22-yard strike from Westfal to first-year wide receiver
Cody Smith (Irvine, Calif,/Orange Lutheran) and took the lead on a
25-yard Prichard field goal that followed a Vogelbach interception
with 25 seconds left. Guilford then closed the first half scoring
with a 39-yard field goal by junior placekicker Hunter Chappell
(Elizabeth City, N.C./Northeastern) as time expired to knot the
score at 17-17 entering the break.
The Quakers took a 24-17 lead on a 69-yard interception return for
a touchdown by first-year defensive back Kenneth Hyman
(Williamston, N.C./Roanoke), but Sitterson again tied the score
(24-24) on a 48-yard touchdown run with 5:18 left in the third
quarter.
Sitterson, who had limited practice during the week with a rib
injury, rushed 13 times for 91 yards and one touchdown, caught five
passes for 53 yards and totaled 179 yards on kickoff returns. In
the process, he eclipsed Chris Leiser '81 to become
W&L's all-time leader for career kickoff return yards
(1,866). Westfal completed 14-of-20 passes for 142 yards and two
touchdowns, while senior wide receiver Billy Murray (Louisville,
Ky./Trinity) snared two passes for 20 yards and a first-quarter
touchdown. Senior defensive lineman Scott Russell (Mendham,
N.J./West Morris Mendham) and junior defensive back Frank Dale
(Tulsa, Okla./Cascia) led the defense with 12 tackles apiece.
Vogelbach paced the Guilford offense by competing 29-of-51 passes
for 293 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. In the
process, he moved into third place on the NCAA Division III
all-time passing yards list (12,770). Junior wide receiver Chad
Kastor (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) snared 11 passes for 107 yards and
Vaughn caught nine passes for 120 yards and two scores. Parker
carried 18 times for 98 yards and one touchdown. Junior linebacker
Richie Paul (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot) led the Guilford
defense with nine tackles and a shared sack.
