FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee swimming teams opened their 2007-08 seasons with a meet against Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon. Then men won by a score of 169-93, while the women were defeated by the Eagles, 169-93.

The men's win was highlighted by the performances of seniors Will Hartmann (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy), Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) and Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day). Hartmann took first place in the 100 back (54:87), the 200 back (2:01.86) and the 200 IM (2:02.55), while McGlaston on the 50 free in an NCAA "B" cut time of 20.82. Sweet won a pair of events, touching first in the 200 free (1:44.59) and the 100 free (47.01).

McGlaston also competed on the winning 200 free (1:26.13) and 200 medley (1:38.46) relays. On the 200 medley relay, he was joined by junior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell), and sophomores Winston Stagg (Midlothian, Va./Maggie L. Walker Governor's School) and Josh Gonzalez (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan). Crook, McGlaston, Sweet and sophomore Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kansas / Shawnee) comprised the winning 200 free relay.

Crook also took home two wins for W&L, finishing first in the 100 breast in a time of 1:02.50 and the 500 free in a time of 4:48.91.

On the women's side, the Generals were led by freshman Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill. / New Trier), who won two events. Hayden placed first in the 1000 free with a time of 11:07.11 and the 500 free in a time of 5:25.15.

Additionally, juniors Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Maggie Walker Governor's School) and Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) each won an individual event for the Blue and White. Strachan placed first in the 100 back (1:01.70), while Miata registered the top time in the 100 fly (1:03.11).

The Generals return to action on Saturday when they host Transylvania at noon.
