LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Allie Weir scored the game-winning goal in double-overtime as Lynchburg gave the Washington and Lee field hockey team its first ODAC loss, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va.
The Generals struck first in the opening period as senior forward Amy Volkmann (Norfolk, Va./Granby) notched an unassisted goal at 10:30. The Hornets responded with a goal of their own just over two minutes later when Samantha Howard scored off a feed from Weir, however, junior midfielder Kay Dyt (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) gave the Generals a 2-1 lead going into halftime when she registered a goal off an assist from junior midfielder Kendall Korte (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) in the 22nd minute.
W&L held on to its 2-1 advantage until Morgan Crandall tied the contest in the 56th minute off a penalty shot. The game remained knotted at 2-2 through regulation, the first overtime period and into the second overtime period when Weir broke the tie with the game-winner off an assist from Paige Bennett at 88:57.
Junior Tara Rubenstein (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) tallied seven saves in goal for W&L, while Elizabeth Foskey made three saves for Lynchburg.
With the loss, the Generals are now second-seed in the 2006 ODAC Tournament and will host the seventh-seeded Roanoke on Saturday. The game time has yet to be determined.
