EMORY, Va. -- The top-seeded Washington and Lee volleyball team won its fifth-straight ODAC Championship after defeating Virginia Wesleyan (30-16, 30-19, 30-17) in the tournament semifinals and then topping Randolph-Macon (30-25, 30-21, 26-30, 30-16) in the championship match.
Senior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) was named the tournament MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team by junior libero Lauren Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) and senior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud).
In the win over the Marlins, W&L was paced by Gaillard's 13 kills and six blocks. Senior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) notched nine kills, nine digs and four blocks, while Edmonson posted 17 digs. Gladysz amassed 40 assists and 16 digs.
In the championship victory over Randolph-Macon, the Generals (32-4) were again led by Gaillard's 16 kills and nine blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Jessica Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) registered 14 kills and four aces, while Byrne recorded 11 kills, 24 digs, six blocks and three aces. Edmonson notched 18 digs and Gladysz racked up 48 assists and 20 digs.
W&L will now await word on who it will face in the NCAA Tournament to be played on Thursday and Friday.
