LEXINGTON, Va. -- Bridgewater College blocked three kicks and picked off four Washington and Lee passes, including three in the red zone, to defeat the Generals 17-13 in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon.
The Generals (5-3, 3-2) assumed a 6-0 lead just 2:26 into the game as freshman running back Stuart Sitterson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. The score was set up by a Bridgewater fumble on the first play from scrimmage. Bridgewater sophomore defensive lineman Carlton Morrison (Glasgow, Va./Glasgow) blocked the ensuing extra point and senior defensive back Deon Mays (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) took the ball the other way for a two-point play.
W&L was poised to extend its lead with a 30-yard field goal after Bridgewater fumbled the ensuing kickoff, but junior placekicker Ben Long's (Frankford, W.Va./Hargrave Military) kick was again blocked by Morrison. The Eagles (6-1, 4-0) crawled to within 6-5 with 2:13 remaining in the first quarter as senior kicker David Blackwell (Asheboro, N.C./Hargrave Military) kicked a 36-yard field goal, but the Generals again threatened by driving to the BC 1 yardline with 3:16 remaining in the second quarter. However, senior quarterback Greg Tweardy's (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) second down pass was intercepted in the end zone by Mays.
After stopping Bridgewater on the following possession, Tweardy found junior wide receiver Colton Ward (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) with a 38-yard scoring strike with 55 seconds remaining in the half and Long's extra point was good for a 13-5 W&L lead at the half.
After a three-and-out by W&L to begin the third quarter, BC junior running back Winston Young (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Boyd Anderson) blocked a punt by senior punter Donny Banks (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) and junior linebacker Alton Richardson (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) recovered it in the end zone to cut the Generals' advantage to 13-11 with 13:51 remaining in the third quarter. The Eagles' attempt at a two-point conversion failed.
Ward returned the ensuing kickoff 54 yards to the Eagles' 37 yardline, but three plays later, Mays again picked off Tweardy, this time on the 8 yardline.
The Eagles then assumed the lead for good with 7:57 left in the third quarter as Young scored on a 20-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion also failed making the score 17-13.
W&L threatened to assume the lead twice in the fourth quarter, driving inside the Eagles' 20 yardline both times. The Generals were stopped on a 4th-and-2 play from the Eagles 4 yardline with 5:56 left in the game, and Tweardy was again picked off by Mays at the BC 4 yardline with 2:41 remaining in the game.
W&L was led by Ward, who totaled 174 all-purpose yards and one touchdown. He caught six passes for 66 yards, rushed nine times for 32 yards and amassed 76 yards on two kickoff returns. Sitterson tallied 120 all-purpose yards and one touchdown, posting 38 yards on 10 carries and catching seven passes for 42 yards. Tweardy completed 20-of-39 passes for 177 yards and one touchdown, setting a new W&L season record for touchdown passes (17). Junior defensive end Walker Williams (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) paced the defense with six tackles and a pair of sacks.
Bridgewater, which was held to just 290 yards of total offense, was led by Young's 59 rushing yards and one touchdown on nine carries. Sophomore quarterback Jeff Highfill (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd) rushed five times for 55 yards and completed 5-of-12 passes for 47 yards. Mays led the BC defense with six tackles, three interceptions and the PAT return for a score.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Emory & Henry for a 1:00 pm contest.
