LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team opened its 2004 campaign by splitting its two matches in the opening round of the W&L Invitational. The Generals defeated Catholic, 30-17, 30-21, 30-20, then dropped a 23-30, 30-23, 27-30, 24-30 decision to Christopher Newport.
In the win over Catholic (2-3), the Generals were paced by senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll), who tallied 19 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep) notched 12 kills, while junior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) had 11 kills and eight digs. Junior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) amassed 50 assists and 15 digs.
In the loss to the Captains (5-2), the Generals were led by Hurt, who totaled 18 kills and 10 digs. Wolfing contributed 13 kills and 14 digs, while junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) registered 13 kills and five blocks. Gladysz added 42 assists and 12 digs.
Washington and Lee (1-1) will return to action on Saturday as it takes on Frostburg State at 12:30 pm. CNU will take on Averett at 10:00 am, while Mary Washington faces Catholic at the same time. The championship and consolation matches will occur at 3:00 pm.
