W&L Volleyball Competes at Centre Invitational

DANVILLE, Ky. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team had its winning streak snapped at 19 matches as it split a pair of matches at the Centre Invitational on Saturday evening. The Generals downed 20th-ranked Southwestern, 30-21, 30-27, 30-21, before falling to the host Colonels, 30-18, 34-32, 30-26.

In the win over Southwestern (20-8), the Generals were paced by sophomore outside hitter Ashley Hurt (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Trinity Prep), who totaled 13 kills. Senior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) posted 12 kills, 11 digs and three aces, while junior middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud) registered 10 kills. Junior middle blocker Taylor Gibson (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) recorded seven kills and six blocks, and junior right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) notched five kills, six digs and six blocks. Junior setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep) added 42 assists.

In the loss to Centre (24-9), W&L was paced by Byrne's 11 kills, nine digs and three blocks. Wolfing notched nine kills and three aces, while Hurt tallied nine kills. Gladysz amassed 36 assists and nine digs.

Washington and Lee (24-5) returns to action on Sunday as it faces eighth-ranked Mt. St. Joseph (9:00 am) and Thomas More (1:00 pm) in the final day of the Centre Invitational.
