W&L Volleyball Wins Fifth ODAC Championship in Six Years

ASHLAND, Va. -- Top-seeded Washington and Lee claimed its fifth ODAC Volleyball Championship in the last six years as the Generals defeated third-seeded Bridgewater, 30-28, 23-30, 30-23, 30-14 in the title match on Saturday afternoon.

Washington and Lee (34-23) advanced to the final round of the ODAC tournament after besting fourth-seeded Roanoke, 30-21, 30-19, 30-22, in the semifinals earlier in the day.

Junior outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) earned tournament MVP honors, and was joined on the all-tournament squad by fellow General, sophomore setter Christine Gladysz (Palm Harbor, Fla./Berkeley Prep).

Against Roanoke, W&L was led by sophomore middle blocker Susan Gaillard (Charleston, S.C./Porter-Gaud), who tallied 15 kills. Junior outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) recorded 13 kills and 12 digs, while sophomore right side Laura Byrne (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) contributed 10 kills and five assists. Gladysz had 47 assists, 15 digs and one ace in the victory, and junior libero Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) added 15 digs.

In the title match, Gaillard had 13 kills and three blocks, while Wolfing amassed 12 kills, 18 digs and two aces. Gladysz recorded 46 assists, three blocks and four aces, while Lux had 15 digs and Chastain had nine kills. Byrne contributed 13 digs and two aces, while sophomore middle blocker Taylor Gibson (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) added four blocks. Sophomore setter Virginia Baird (Houston, Texas/Lamar) connected on five aces.

With the win, W&L advances to the first round of the NCAA South Regional, hosted by Trinity in San Antonio, Texas. The third-seeded Generals will face sixth-seeded Averett on Thursday. Match time has yet to be determined.
