LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore midfielder S.B. Northen (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) scored the eventual game-winning goal and dished out an assist as the Washington and Lee field hockey team defeated Lynchburg, 3-2, in ODAC action on Thursday night.
The Generals (6-7, 4-2) took a 1-0 lead into the half as senior forward Kelly Taffe (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) scored at 23:53 off an assist from Northen. Following the break, sophomore midfielder Jane Beall (Richmond, Va./James River) stretched W&L's lead to 2-0, with an unassisted goal at 27:22.
The Hornets (7-7, 3-3) retaliated at 15:22 with a goal from sophomore forward Andrea Fleming (Milford, Del./Milford), but Northen responded for the Generals and sank what would prove to be the game-winner at 11:03. Sophomore defender Dawn McGaha (Wyoming, Del./Caesar Rodney) restarted the Lynchburg offense with a goal at 5:30, but the W&L defense stifled the Hornets' attempted come-back and held on to win.
Sophomores Elise Gelinas (Rosemont, Pa./Agnes Irwin) and Courtney Harrison (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) split time in the Generals' goal. Harrison started and made three saves, while Gelinas took over duties in the second half and made two saves.
Junior Joanne Yednock (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) played 62:39 in the Lynchburg goal and made three saves. Freshman Lyndsey Nunes (Holyoke, Mass./West Springfield) made three stops in the final 7:21.
The Generals return to action on Saturday when they travel to Hollins. Game time is 11:00 a.m.
