MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball improved to 25-3 overall with a pair of wins in the opening day of the Maryville Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Generals defeated Sewanee, 30-23, 30-18, 30-13, and Stillman, 30-17, 30-16, 30-19.
In the win over Sewanee, freshman outside hitter Michelle Chastain (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) led the way with 16 kills and six digs. Senior middle blocker Lindsay Ruckert (Metairie, La./Sacred Heart) amassed nine kills and 10 digs, while senior middle blocker Leslie Fischbeck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) totaled nine kills and four blocks. Freshman outside hitter Emily Wolfing (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) recorded six kills, seven digs and five aces and freshman setter Jennifer Lux (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) added 36 assists and eight aces.
Against Stillman, Fischbeck led W&L with eight kills, while Lux posted 22 assists and six digs. Senior outside hitter Sara Heusel (Ann Arbor, Mich./Novi) registered six kills, six aces and five digs.
The Generals will be in action again on Saturday in the Maryville Invitational as they face Cumberland (Ky.) at 1:00 pm and Maryville at 3:00 pm.
