W&L Football Defeats Hampden-Sydney, 24-12

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Freshman running back Chris Sullivan (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) rushed for 115 yards and one touchdown and senior quarterback Christian Batcheller (Stuart, Va./Patrick County) threw for 287 yards and two scores as Washington and Lee ruined Hampden-Sydney's homecoming with a 24-12 win over the Tigers.

Batcheller put the Generals up 7-0 with 12:14 remaining in the second quarter as he hit freshman tight end Davis White (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) with a 22-yard touchdown pass. He then put the Generals up 14-0 exactly four minutes later, hitting senior wide receiver J.T. Malatesta (Washington, D.C./Landon) with a 20-yard scoring strike.

The Tigers (1-5, 0-4) would then retaliate as running back Kevin Tucker scored on a three-yard plunge with 3:14 remaining in the half to cut the W&L lead to 14-6. The extra point attempt was blocked.

W&L (2-4, 2-2) would add another touchdown before the half, this time on a 16-yard run by Sullivan with 1:46 remaining to give the Generals a 21-6 halftime advantage.

Both teams remained scoreless until 10:14 remained in the game, when junior placekicker Andy Vendig (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) booted a 31-yard field goal to put W&L ahead, 24-6.

Hampden-Sydney would respond on an 18-yard scoring strike from quarterback Walt Bondurant to tight end Matt Niemaseck with 8:13 remaining to make the score 24-12. The Tigers two-point conversion failed. W&L held the Tigers in check for the remainder of the game for the 24-12 victory.

Batcheller completed 23-of-33 attempts and became the W&L leader in career touchdown tosses surpassing Brooks Fischer (35). Malatesta caught eight passes for 102 yards, marking the fourth-straight game he has gone over 100 yards receiving. White also snagged five passes for 92 yards. Bondurant led the Sydney offense, going 15-of-31 for 170 yards.

The Generals defense was led by junior free safety Will Baker (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), who recorded a game-high 14 tackles and an interception.

Washington and Lee will next compete on Saturday, Oct. 23, as it travels to University of the South. Gametime is set for 1:30 pm Central Standard Time.
