LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams both were defeated by Sewanee and Johns Hopkins in a double-dual meet on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon at the Cy Twombly Pool. The men lost to Johns Hopkins by a score of 124-21 and to Sewanee by a score of 97-48. The women were defeated by Hopkins (103-42) and by Sewanee (106-38).
The most impressive performer of the meet for the Generals was senior captain Margaret Hoehl (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma), who won three events and broke the school record in the 500 free by defeating the NCAA Division III top-ranked swimmer in the 500 fr ee, Jane Harrison Chapman of Sewanee. Hoehl covered the distance in 5:09.43 breaking the former record held by Elizabeth Miles since the 1989 season. The time was also an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Hoehl also took home first place in the 200 fre e with a time of 1:57.83 and the 1650 free with a time of 17:53.11, also a provisional qualifying time.
Leading the way for the men was junior co-captain Jared Fribush (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch), who took home second place in the 50 free with a time of 22.05 and the 100 free with a time of 49.76.
W&L's men's and women's swimming teams will be in action again on Jan. 30 when they host Mary Washington in a dual meet. Start time is set for 2:00 pm.
