Sarah Assante is in her second year as the Washington and Lee Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach for the 2020-21 season.
Assante helped coach the Generals to an 18-8 overall record and a 15-3 mark in the ODAC, earning the team the No. 2 seed for the ODAC Tournament. The season included a program-record 10-game winning streak in the middle of the season, as the team won 13-of-14 to close the regular season. Assante helped junior guard Erin Hughes to First Team All-ODAC honors, while seniors Taylor Casey and Andy Smithey made second team and sophomore guard Megan Horn earned a third team nod.
Assante comes to Lexington after spending the previous two seasons as the assistant coach for the Regis College women’s basketball team, while serving as the assistant strength and conditioning coach during her second season. During her time at Regis, she coordinated recruiting efforts and served as a liaison to admissions and financial aid, as well as handled all film breakdown and scouting reports and managed individual player development. She also supervised all student managers and was a co-advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
During March 2019, Assante worked as an assistant basketball trainer for Integrity Hoops in Santa Monica, Calif., where she assisted USA Basketball personal trainer Noah LaRoche and also assisted with on-court workouts for professional basketball player Diana Taurasi.
Assante also served as an assistant coach for the Southern Maine Community College women’s basketball team during the 2016-17 season, where she executed individual workouts for players and coordinated strength and conditioning programs for the team. She helped the team to a 24-5 record that season, the best record in school history, and a trip to the Final Four of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Tournament.
A 2015 graduate of Saint Joseph’s College (Maine), Assante was a four-year member of the women’s basketball team and served as a team captain for her final two seasons. She played in 82 games in her career and helped the team to a 75-35 overall record, with a 37-11 mark in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC). Over her four years, the Monks made two appearances in the GNAC Championship game and won the conference title in 2013-14. Assante also became the third player in school history to tally at least 500 points, 350 rebounds and 250 assists in a career.
Assante graduated from Saint Joseph’s in May 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting and earned a Master of Science in organizational and professional communication from Regis College in May 2019.
