LEXINGTON, Va. — The No. 17 Washington and Lee University field hockey team scored twice in the opening quarter and added a goal in each of the next two periods to earn a 4-1 nationally ranked victory over No. 22 University of Mary Washington on Wednesday night at W&L Turf Field.
The Generals (4-2) responded from Saturday's shootout setback to No. 4 Johns Hopkins by controlling the attack against the Eagles (4-2). W&L finished with an 18-6 advantage in shots, placed 10 attempts on goal and limited Mary Washington to three shots on cage.
Madeline Lancione factored into three of the Generals' four goals with a goal and two assists, while
Britty Page,
Libby Bowers and
Margaret Cover also found the back of the cage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- W&L struck less than three minutes into the contest. Madeline Lancione carried the ball into the circle from the right side and sent a cross toward Britty Page in front of the cage. Page slipped the ball past the Eagles' defense and goalkeeper at the 2:59 mark to give the Generals an early 1-0 advantage.
- Mary Washington threatened less than a minute later, but Morgan Craig recorded a defensive save on Grayson Scott's attempt. The Eagles eventually equalized at 9:33 when Hannah Jadgchew scored off an assist from Makenzie Tutone.
- The tie lasted less than five minutes. A bouncing ball down the right sideline found Madeline Lancione, who collected it in stride and carried into the circle before taking on the goalkeeper one-on-one. Lancione finished the opportunity at 14:19 for what proved to be the decisive tally, sending W&L into the first-quarter break with a 2-1 lead.
- W&L continued to pressure the Mary Washington cage in the second quarter. After goalkeeper Tori Winans stopped Charlotte Dreany at 18:27, Libby Bowers collected the rebound and found the cage six seconds later to extend the lead to 3-1.
- The Generals outshot the Eagles 7-0 in the second period and carried the two-goal advantage into halftime.
- Washington and Lee needed just 42 seconds after halftime to add its fourth goal. Lancione found Margaret Cover, who finished the opportunity at 30:42 for a 4-1 advantage.
- Mary Washington generated four shots during the third quarter, but Helenka Chodakiewicz made a save and the W&L defense kept the Eagles off the board.
- The Generals closed out the victory by holding Mary Washington without a shot during the final 15 minutes while generating five attempts of their own.

- Madeline Lancione led the offense with four points on one goal and two assists. She also paced the Generals with four shots.
- Britty Page, Libby Bowers and Margaret Cover each scored once as four different Generals found the cage.
- Bowers placed all three of her shots on goal.

- Helenka Chodakiewicz allowed one goal and made one goalkeeper save over 60 minutes to improve to 4-2 on the season.
