Women’s Track and Field Records Seven Personal Bests at New Captains Classic

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Washington and Lee University women's track and field team registered seven personal bests, two top-ten marks and 33 top-eight finishes at the New Captains Classic on Saturday.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MEET
  • Claire Fuchs captured first place in the 3,000m with a personal-best time of 11:48.94. The Generals also dominated the 800m, where Cassie Carr (2:17.09) and Amelia Weenig (2:20.92) finished first and second, respectively—both recording personal bests. Carr's performance additionally moved her to No. 5 all-time in program history, moving past Elizabeth Webb's mark of 2:17.34 which was set in 2008.
  • In the 1,500m, Julie Anne Bush placed second with a personal-best 4:53.86, while Maddy Morgan followed with a personal-best 4:58.37 for fourth. Mary Gorsky (7th - 5:03.77) and MacKenzie Moore (8th - 5:04.89) rounded out a deep showing in the event.
  • The sprint and hurdle groups delivered standout performances as well. Lucy Buchmayr led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100m hurdles with a winning time of 15.78, followed by Elizabeth Sawicki and Joanne Lee. Lilly Versen took first in the 100m (12.60), with Kaia Beddows (4th - 13.08s) and Simmons Lee (7th - 13.31s) finishing in the top-eight. The 4x100m relay team of Olivia D'Ambrosia, Versen, Ana Hodneland, and Beddows claimed first place with a time of 49.19.
  • In the 200m, Jesma Evans finished third (26.23), while Annabelle Sutliff (5th - 26.78s) and Hodneland (8th - 27.25s) turned in top-eight finishes. 
  • In the field events, the Generals continued their success. Abby Cholewa and Mad McMurphy shared first place in the pole vault (3.24m), while Gabby Pullen added a fourth-place finish with a mark of 2.94m. Camille Gillum (3rd) and Simone Kasischke (5th) both cleared 1.53m in the high jump.
  • Mackenzie Morante posted a personal-best 4.93m in the long jump for fourth and followed with a second-place finish in the triple jump (10.44m). Lilly Versen added a third-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 4.97m. 
  • The throwing events saw Katie Wood lead the shot put group with a personal-best 11.30m for third place, tying her for No. 6 all-time in program history with Emily Barker. Bella Timmerding recorded a season-best mark (10.73m) for fifth, while Emily Jackson (4th - 10.86m) and Leah Smith (7th - 10.48m) rounded out the quartet in the shot put. In the discus, Bailey Hedgemon led the way with a third-place throw of 34.50m, followed by Smith (6th - 33.37m) and Jackson (8th - 29.77m).
