No. 10 Generals sit fourth after one round in spring opener at Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The 10th-ranked Washington and Lee women's golf team was in action on Monday for the first time this spring, and they sit in fourth place through one round of play at the Savannah Invitational.

TEAM & INDIVIDUAL LEADERS THRU ROUND 1:
  • Second-ranked Carnegie Mellon fired a 14-under 278 on Monday to grab an eight-stroke lead over No. 1 Emory. Washington (Mo.) followed at 4-over, with the Generals three strokes behind the Bears for fourth place.
  • Individually, CMU's Alyssa Lim and Emma Wong, along with Emory's Carys Code, are all tied atop the leaderboard at 4-under par. There is a three-way tie for fourth place at 3-under, with another three-way tie for eighth at 2-under.
W&L ROUND 1 PLAYER SUMMARIES:
  • Sophomore Berkeley Bundy and senior Julia Haetzel were the top Generals in round one, completing the opening round tied for 16th place at 1-over par. Bundy had one birdie and 15 pars, including an even-par 37 on the front nine. Haetzel sank birdies on 3 and 14, added 13 pars and shot an even 36 on the back nine.
  • First-year Toral Bhatt settled in at 25th on the individual leaderboard after an opening-round 2-over 75. Bhatt had a hot start at 2-under through her first four holes.
  • Sophomore Alex Crews made her season debut in the starting lineup for the Generals and shot a 3-over 76. Crews opened the day on hole 5 and made eight consecutive pars before bogeying 3-of-4 holes. Crews had 15 pars, nine of which came on the front nine.
  • First-year Mackenzie Cline completed the W&L starting lineup with a 4-over 77. Cline led the starters with three birdies on the day which came in a six-hole span on 16, 17 and 3. Her two birdies on 16 and 17 led her to a 1-under 35 on the back nine.
  • First-years Bella Scucchi and Morgan Maddox were also in action for the Blue and White, competing as individuals. Scucchi shot a 1-under 72 for the day with a team-high four birdies, while Maddox matched Haetzel's output of a 1-over on two birdies and 13 pars. Scucchi's 1-under places her 11th on the leaderboard.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The Generals topped the field, as a team, in par-3 scoring at 2.85. They were also third in round one for par-5 scoring (5.08) and tied for eighth in par-4 scoring (4.27).
  • W&L also led all teams with 66 pars on the day, ranked tied for the second-fewest bogeys (14) and tied for fewest doubles+ (2).
  • Cline tied with Claudia Zhang (CMU) and Caroline Fixter (CMU) for the best par-3 scoring average in round one at 2.50. Bhatt, Maddox and Scucchi were among the top par-5 scorers at 1-under apiece, just one stroke behind Code (Emory).
  • Scucchi's four birdies tied her for seventh most on day one, while Bundy's and Crews' 15 pars were tied for the most in the field. Scucchi also tied for the fewest bogeys (1) and doubles+ (1).
