Bhatt, No. 8 W&L second after 36 holes at the Stith Invitational

GLEN ALLEN, Va. – First-year Toral Bhatt and the eighth-ranked Washington and Lee women's golf team both sit second on the respective individual and team leaderboards after 36 holes of play Monday to open the Stith Invitational.
 
COURSE STATS:

  • Round 1 Average Score: 82.43 (84 rounds)
  • Round 2 Average Score: 80.04 (80 rounds)
TEAM & INDIVIDUAL LEADERS THRU DAY 1:
  • No. 3 NYU is first after the first day of action at 6-over (297-285—582), followed by the Generals at 17-over (297-296—593). No. 2 Carnegie Mellon is 13 shots behind W&L, with No. 11 Randolph-Macon (+32) and No. 24 Huntingdon (+42) in fifth.
  • The Violets and Generals were tied for the team lead after Round 1 at 9-over par, before NYU shot 3-under as a team in the second round. W&L's 8-over on the back-half of the day was third-best in the field (CMU, +7)
  • Shih Ting Tan of NYU is the individual leader after Monday's two rounds. She was 1-under (71) in the morning and 2-under (70) in the afternoon to head into Tuesday's third round at 3-under par.
  • Bhatt (73-72—145) is tied with Mary Charles Davis of Huntingdon for second, with Sonia Hao (NYU) and Yvette Gorden (Huntingdon) tied for fourth (+2).
W&L DAY 1 PLAYER SUMMARIES:
  • Bhatt was the Generals' top player in both rounds on Monday. She opened with a 1-over 73 in Round 1 with three birdies and 11 pars, before she followed that up with an even-par 72 in the afternoon. Bhatt added four birdies to her card in Round 2, plus 10 more pars.
  • Sophomore Berkeley Bundy sits in sixth place individually after a 3-over (73-74—147) on Monday. Bundy sank three birdies in the opening 18, all on consecutive holes towards the end of her round, before another three birdies and 11 pars in Round 2. Bundy was under par on the front nine in both rounds, totaling 3-under on those combined 18 holes.
  • First-year Bella Scucchi shot 6-over (74-76—150) for the day and is in 11th place on the leaderboard. Scucchi's opening round was just 2-over with four birdies, before she went 4-over with three birdies in the afternoon. She shot even par (37-35—72) for the day on Holes 10-18.
  • First-year Mackenzie Cline is two shots and five places behind Scucchi. After an opening-round 6-over (78), Cline rebounded to tie Bundy for the second-best W&L score in round 2 (+2). Cline sank three birdies in the second round, totaling seven for the day.
  • Senior Julia Haetzel completes the field of Generals in Glen Allen this week. She shot 5-over (77) in both rounds and will head into Tuesday's third round in 22nd place in the 84-player field. Haetzel had three birdies on the day and 23 pars.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The Generals lead the tournament in both par-3 (3.10) and par-5 (4.88) scoring, while ranking third in par-4 (4.29) average. W&L made the most birdies on day one (30), two more than NYU, and are second to the Violets (113) in pars (102).
  • W&L also limited mistakes in the opening 36 holes of the Stith with the second-fewest bogeys (39) and second-fewest bogeys+ (9).
  • Scucchi is the current leader in par-3 scoring at 2.75, behind two birdies and four pars on the six par-3 holes. Cline sits fourth in par-3 scoring at even-par.
  • Bhatt is tied for third in par-4 scoring (4.05), with Bundy tied for ninth (4.15), while both players are tied for second in par-5 scoring (4.75). Scucchi also played well on the par-5s on Monday, averaging 4.88 strokes per hole, tied for eighth best.
  • Cline, Bhatt and Scucchi each sank seven birdies on Monday, tied for the fifth most in the field, with Bundy (6) tied for ninth in that category. Haetzel (23) and Bundy (22) both rank in the Top 10 for pars made.
