No. 4 Men’s Golf Earns Second Place Finish at Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga.  - The fourth-ranked Washington and Lee University men's golf team moved up one spot in the final round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational on Sunday to secure a second place finish.

The Blue and White posted the third-lowest round of the day with a score of eight-under par to move up one spot and secure a runner-up finish with a score of 28-under par (281-275-280 – 836). W&L carded an eight-under par (280) this afternoon to move past No. 6 Sewanee over the final 18. They played the front nine at five-under par, recording nine birdies, while shooting three-under on the back nine with eight birdies. Overall, the Generals played the first nine holes to 15-under par with 25 birdies and an eagle from William Hull while shooting 13-under par on holes 10-18 with 31 birdies and an eagle from Tim Kaufman.


No. 1 Huntingdon secured the team title after finishing the tournament with a score of 38-under par while shooting ten-under this afternoon. Following the Generals in third was No. 6 Sewanee (-25), which fell one spot after shooting three-under in the final round. No. 3 Carnegie Mellon finished in fourth with a score of 22-under par, while No. 13 Kenyon and No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps finished in a tie for fifth place with a score of 16-under par, both firing scores of nine-under par to move up four spots in the final round.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
  • No. 1-ranked Jonathan McEwen led the Blue and White with a second-place finish, carding a score of 14-under par through 54 holes. He followed up rounds of 69 (-3) and 65 (-7) with a four-under 68 this afternoon. He recorded three birdies on the front nine, including two on the first three holes of the round, before adding two more on the back nine on holes 10 (372-yard, par 4) and 12 (353-yard, par 4). McEwen shot even par on the par 3s this weekend while shooting six-under on par 4s and eight-under on par 5s. He finished the tournament ranked tied for fourth in total birdies with 16 and tied for 15th in pars with 36.
  • Charlie Krasnewich put together his second straight top-10 finish as he ended the tournament with a score of eight-under par to finish in 10th place. After shooting one-over par in the first round, he bounced back with a pair of under-par rounds, following up yesterday's 65 (-7) with a two-under (70) performance. This afternoon, Krasnewich carded three birdies, including two on the front nine, with 14 pars. He finished the tournament at one-under par on the par 4s while shooting nine-under on the par 5s. He ranked tied for eighth in the field in birdies with 15 while carding 33 pars.
  • 11th-ranked Tim Kaufman finished in a tie for 17th place with a score of five-under par through 54 holes of action. He shot a two-under 70 in round one before carding a 73 (+1) in round two. He bounced back with a four-under par 68 to move up 22 spots and secure a top-20 finish for the sixth time this season. Kaufman recorded a pair of birdies and five pars on the front nine before posting a bogey-free back nine, tallying four birdies in six holes, including two straight on holes 14 and 15. He played even par on the par 3s while shooting ten-under par on the par 5s. He registered 13 birdies, 31 pars, and an eagle this weekend.
  • William Hull wrapped up the tournament in a tie for 64th place at three-over par. After shooting three-under and even par in the first two rounds, Hull carded a six-over 78 with one birdie and 12 pars. He played the par 5s to a score of seven-over par this weekend while registering 10 birdies, 31 pars, and an eagle.
  • Turner Edwards rounded out the action for the Blue and White, finishing in 145th place with a score of 24-over par. Edwards bounced back in round three after shooting an 82 (round one) and 84 (round two) with a two-over par 74 on Sunday. He carded three birdies in the final round, including a pair in a four-hole stretch on the front nine, with 11 pars.
