No. 10 Women's Golf comes in seventh at Savannah Invitational

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The No. 10 Washington and Lee women's golf team placed seventh at the Savannah Invitational, with first-year Bella Scucchi claiming a Top 10 individual finish to highlight the Generals' efforts.

TEAM & INDIVIDUAL LEADERS THRU ROUND 2:
  • Second-ranked Carnegie Mellon claimed the team title in decisive fashion, shooting a 10-under 282 on Tuesday to finish the 36-hole tournament at 24-under (560). In a distant second, No. 1 Emory and No. 7 WashU tied at 4-over (588).
  • Carnegie Mellon's Emma Wong took the top spot on the individual leaderboard at 7-under (69-70—139), followed by teammates Samantha Wang (70-70—140) and Cecilia Jia (70-70—140) one stroke each behind.
  • The Generals came in seventh as a team with a 22-over 606. After an opening round 7-over 299, the Blue and White shot 15-over 307 on Tuesday.
  • Individually, Scucchi was the top finisher for W&L at seventh place overall. Scucchi shot 3-under (72-71—143) for the tournament and was under par both days.
W&L ROUND 2 PLAYER SUMMARIES:
  • Scucchi fired off five birdies on Tuesday to complete round two with a 2-under 71. Three of her birdies came on the back nine (-2) with her other two helping her to an even-par 37 on the front nine.
  • Sophomore Berkeley Bundy was W&L's top player towards the team score at 2-over for the day and 3-over for the tournament. Bundy birdied No. 7 and was even on the front nine, as she tied for 20th on the individual leaderboard.
  • First-year Morgan Maddox, who also competed as an individual this week, had another solid round after a first-round 1-over 74. She finished day two at 2-over (75) and sank four birdies and 11 pars.
  • Senior Julia Haetzel and first-year Toral Bhatt both shot 4-over 77 on Tuesday to place 28th (+5) and 36th (+6), respectively. Haetzel made three birdies and was even on the back nine, while Bhatt sank two birdies and was also even on the back nine.
  • Sophomore Alex Crews rounded out the team scoring for the Blue and White with a second-round 5-over 78. Crews tied Bundy (14) for the most pars on the day for the Generals, with a bogey on 17 as the only blemish on a 1-over 37 on the back nine.
  • First-year Mackenzie Cline rounded out the team scoring at 7-over for the day and 11-over (77-80—157) for the tournament. Cline had two birdies and eight pars in round two.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The Generals finished Top 10 in par-3, par-4 and par-5 scoring for the tournament. They were fourth on par 3s (3.16), tied for fifth on par 5s (5.20) and eighth on par 4s (4.19).
  • W&L ranked third at the Savannah Invitational in pars made (121) and had the fourth-fewest bogeys (38).
  • Scucchi was the tournament's top player in par-5 scoring. She finished at 4-under with an average score of 4.60. She birdied six of the course's 10 par-5 holes and made par an additional three times.
  • Scucchi also finished tied for third in most birdies made (9), just one behind Yvette Gordon (Huntingdon) and Jia (CMU). Bundy and Crews led all players with 29 pars apiece.

UP NEXT:
The Generals will be back in action next week when they play in their first 54-hole event of the season. They open play with 18 holes on Friday, March 20, at the Jekyll Invitational in Jekyll Island, Ga., at Great Dunes Golf Course.
