Nichoson Surpasses 1,000 Career Assists in Sweep over Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, Va. - Sophomore Sienna Nichoson of the Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team notched her 1,000th career assist in their straight sets win over Shenandoah University on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED (W&L, 3-0 | 25-20, 25-11, 25-15)
  • Shenandoah (8-6, 3-3 ODAC) opened the match with a 10-5 run to take an early lead. The Generals (11-2, 4-1 ODAC) responded with an 8-3 run of their own to level the first frame at 13. The run featured kills from Grace Mitchener, Sienna Nichoson, Emma Mulvaney and Ava Fugitt, while Claire Hargett recorded back-to-back service aces. After consecutive points from the Hornets, the Generals went on a 6-2 run to take their first lead of the set at 19-17. The scoring stretch was fueled by service aces from Nichoson and Cara Hamil, a block from Ava Gaines and Fugitt and a Mulvaney kill. The Blue and White closed the opening frame on another 6-2 run to claim a 25-20 win. The final run saw kills from Gaines, Mitchener and Mulvaney and three errors from the Hornets.
  • W&L kicked off the second set with a 7-3 scoring stretch, which was highlighted by service aces from Emily Schellenberg and Mulvaney, a pair of kills from Mitchener and two blocks from the Mitchener and Gaines duo. The Generals broke the set open, taking a commanding 13-4 lead after rattling off six unanswered points thanks to a kill and service ace from Mitchener as well as a kill from Hargett. An ensuing 7-2 run from the Blue and White extended their lead to 12 late in the set. Four Generals recorded a kill during the run, while Nichoson added a service ace and Gaines and Mitchener teamed up once again for another block. W&L took the second set, 25-11, following a 5-2 run to end the set, which saw kills from Hamil and Gaines, while Mitchener registered the final point with an ace.
  • Both teams traded points early in the third set before the Blue and White went on a 7-1 run to take an 11-5 lead. A pair of errors and a block from Gaines and Fugitt kick-started the run before Mitchener and Fugitt each added kills. The Hornets clawed back, cutting the Generals' lead to just two before W&L added another 7-1 run to take a 21-14 lead. Mulvaney fueled the run with a kill and a service ace, while Gaines tacked on a kill. After a kill from the Hornets, two kills from Mitchener and one from Schellenberg guided the Generals to a 25-15 win to earn the sweep.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Hannah Hylton led the match with 17 kills on 55 swings while adding 19 digs for the Hornets. Mitchener paced the Blue and White's offense with 10 kills on 32 swings with two errors for a .250 clip, adding 15 digs for her ninth double-double of the season.
  • Sienna Nichoson dished out a match-high 28 assists in the win while matching a career high with two service aces. Amanda Schaffer led Shenandoah with 26 assists.
  • Nichoson, Claire Hargett, Emma Mulvaney and Mitchener led the Generals with two service aces each, while Cara Hamil and Emily Schellenberg added one. Amber Shifflett led the Hornets with two, while Samantha Shy recorded one.
  • Ava Gaines led the match with five block assists, while Mitchener tacked on three and Ava Fugitt added a pair. Hylton led SU with a pair of block assists, while Myah Watson and Ashlynn Spence each recorded a solo block.
  • Hylton posted a match-high 19 digs, while Anika Dodge reached double figures with 10. Vivi Vasquez posted a team-high 18 digs in the win, while Mitchener added 15.
W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals moved to 11-2 on the season with a 4-1 mark in league play, winning their 26th straight match over the Hornets.
  • W&L recorded 34 kills on 117 swings with 11 errors for a .197 hitting percentage, posting a match-high .250 clip in the second set. The Generals recorded a season-high 10 service aces, five blocks, 32 assists and 68 digs in the win.
  • Nichoson reached a milestone in just her second season with the Blue and White, dishing out her 1,000th career assist in the win. Her 28 assists this evening brought her career total to 1,000 in just 45 matches.
  • Vivi Vasquez moved past Marli Dabareiner (Randolph-Macon) on the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) career list, bringing her career total to 1,914, which ranks fourth in conference history.
