ROANOKE, Va. — The Washington and Lee University equestrian team opened its 2026-27 Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) season on Saturday with four individual class victories and a fifth-place team finish on the opening day of the Hollins double-header.
The Generals totaled 20 points in the 10-team field, with
Samantha Bourque,
Catie Ortmans,
Kate Hammer and
Brooke Capuzzi each earning first-place finishes. W&L's strongest team-scoring performance came in Intermediate Fences, where the Generals earned seven points.
The University of Lynchburg topped the field with 38 points, followed by Virginia Tech with 31 points after the drop. Host Hollins University finished third with 28 points and James Madison University placed fourth with 24.
The Generals return to the ring Sunday for the second day of the Hollins double-header.
RIDE NOTES
- Bourque earned W&L's first blue ribbon of the day with a first-place finish in Intermediate Fences Section A. She also placed fifth in Open Flat Section A.
- Ortmans won Intermediate Flat Section B, while Kaycie Miranda placed third in Section A. Miranda added a fourth-place showing in Intermediate Fences Section A.
- Christina Ziccardi led the Generals in Limit Fences with a runner-up finish in Section B, while Ryon Sinclair placed fourth in Section A.
- Hammer won Limit Flat Section C, and Sinclair added a third-place finish in Section B.
- Capuzzi claimed the Generals' fourth victory of the day with a first-place finish in Pre-Novice.
- Sierra Johnson placed sixth in Open Flat Section A, while Harper Ullrich finished sixth in Novice Flat Section B.
- Johnson also competed in Open Fences, while Iona Campbell represented the Generals in Introductory.
