LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee University will induct its 38th class to the Athletics Hall of Fame on campus tonight: Friday, September 26.
The group will be officially honored and inducted in a ceremony at 7:00 pm on Friday, and be acknowledged during halftime of the the women's soccer game on Saturday afternoon against Shenandoah University.
For those who cannot attend the ceremony on Friday evening, W&L will offer live video streaming of the event through its broadcast portal for free. To access the live video stream, click here. Induction activities will follow dinner and will begin at approximately 7:30 pm. The entire ceremony will also be archived for future reference on www.generalssports.com/live.
The five Generals that make up the Class of 2025 are Brook Hartzell '00 (Women's Tennis), Lindsey Strachan '09 (Women's Swimming), Elizabeth Webb '09 (Women's Cross Country and Track & Field), Mary Ashleigh Boles '14 (Volleyball) and Zander Tallman '14 (Men's Track and Field). In conjunction with the 38th class of the Washington and Lee Athletics Hall of Fame and the 40th Anniversary of Coeducation and Women's Athletics at Washington and Lee University, the Athletics Hall of Fame Committee is proud to introduce the W&L Trailblazer Award. This distinguished honor recognizes individuals whose vision, leadership, and perseverance opened doors for others and created a lasting legacy within Generals Athletics and the broader community.
Before tonight's Hall of Fame recognition, four individuals will be presented with the inaugural award:
Alston Parker Watt '89 | A true pioneer, Watt represented the Generals by competing in women's golf, swimming & diving, and lacrosse, providing critical leadership during a time when Washington and Lee was working to meet NCAA sport sponsorship requirements.
Martha Cornbrooks '01 |Cornbrooks played a pivotal role in the establishment of the field hockey program, serving as a founding student member and helping to lay the groundwork for a sport that continues to thrive at W&L.
Courtney (Smith) Edman '93 | A founding student-athlete of the women's basketball program, Edman's initiative and determination laid the foundation for the team's future success and growth.
Professor Barry Machado, Emeritus | A dedicated member of the W&L faculty and a tireless advocate for women's athletics, Professor Machado was instrumental in the development of the women's basketball program. His leadership extended beyond advocacy, as he also served as the team's first head coach during its formative years as a club sport.
