MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The 13th-ranked Washington and Lee women's golf team is tied for third through one round of play at the Montgomery Country Club Women's Intercollegiate, with junior
Ella Wong and first-year
Toral Bhatt both inside the Top 10.
TEAM & INDIVIDUAL LEADERS THRU ROUND 1:
- No. 24 Mary Hardin-Baylor holds a two-shot lead over No. 20 Huntingdon through round one at 14-over (302). The Generals are tied with Sewanee in third place at 18-over (306), with Oglethorpe in a distant fifth at 29-over (317).
- Individually, Sewanee's Natalie Catapano shot a 4-under 68 for a two-shot lead over Wong in second place. Camryn Kiser (UMHB) is in third at 1-under par, with Yvette Gordon (Huntingdon) in fourth at even par. There is a three-way tie for fifth (+2 – 74) between Brooke Kocher (UMHB), Dounia Bezzari (Oglethorpe) and Mary Charles Davis (Huntingdon).
W&L ROUND 1 PLAYER SUMMARIES:
- Wong, again, had a standout opening round of play. Her 2-under 70 came on three bogeys, 10 pars and five birdies, tied for the most in the round. Wong was even through 11 holes before going 2-under (3 birdies) over the final seven holes.
- Bhatt is in eighth place individually after a 4-over 76 on Sunday. Bhatt ended her round on a high note with a birdie, while her 13 pars tied for the most in the field.
- First-year Mackenzie Cline is in 13th and is just two shots behind Bhatt. Cline had one birdie on the day and tied for third in the round with 12 pars.
- Senior Julia Haetzel (+10 – 82) and sophomore Berkeley Bundy (+11 – 83) rounded out the W&L starting lineup. Haetzel had two birdies and is in 26th, while Bundy will enter the second round in 29th place.
- Sophomore Alex Crews played as an individual and is tied with Bundy for 29th at 11-over par. Crews birdied the par-4 eighth hole and shot a 2-over par on the front nine.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Three of Wong's five birdies came on par 5's, with her 4.25 average on par 5's tying for the best in the field. Wong was fourth best among all players on par-3 scoring average (3.00) and second in par-4 scoring average (4.10).
- Altogether, the Generals had the most pars on Sunday (50) and the fourth-most birdies (9). They also had the second-best par-3 scoring (3.30), tied for second-best par-4 scoring (4.48) and the fourth-best par-5 scoring (4.95)
- Wong hit 64 percent of her fairways to 57 percent for Cline. Bhatt averaged 240 yards on her drives, hit 44 percent of greens in regulation and had a 54 percent up-and-down success rate. Wong converted 63 percent of her up-and-downs and on 10 occasions needed only one putt to finish a hole.
