No. 13 Women's Golf places eighth at NCAA Preview

PALM DESERT, Calif. – The 13th-ranked Washington and Lee women's golf team wrapped up at the NCAA Preview on Sunday by shooting a 15-over 303 to place eighth in the 15-team field.
 
TEAM & INDIVIDUAL LEADERS THRU ROUND 2:
  • Emma Wong of No. 2 Carnegie Mellon claimed the individual title after a second consecutive 3-under score of 69. Her teammates, Cecilia Jia and Alyssa Lim, along with Shih Ting Tan of No. 10 NYU followed one stroke behind. Emory's Amanda Zheng finished a 3-under for the tournament to take fifth.
  • The Generals' 15-over score of 303 on Sunday put them at 20-over for the two-day tournament (293-303—596).
  • The Tartans also grabbed the team win for the tournament, pulling away from top-ranked Emory with a 9-under 279 on Sunday to finish at 16-under.
  • Emory placed second at 3-under after shooting even par on Sunday. NYU came in third at even par, while No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer (290-295—585), No. 12 Randolph-Macon (293-300—593) and No. 3 Washington (Mo.) (293-300—593) rounded out the top five teams.
W&L ROUND 2 PLAYER SUMMARIES:
  • Junior Ella Wong, an individual co-leader entering the day, landed at 17th on the individual leaderboard after shooting a 5-over 77. Her two-day score was 2-over par (69-77—146).
  • Sophomore Berkeley Bundy came in four spots behind Wong on the individual leaderboard and was the Generals' top performer on Sunday. She shot 2-over for the second day in a row, including an even par on the front nine, and she sank three birdies.
  • First-year Toral Bhatt also matched her own day one performance with another 3-over 75 to take 28th overall. Bhatt had one birdie on the day but just four bogeys and went 1-over par on the back nine.
  • Senior Julia Haetzel and first-year Mackenzie Cline rounded out the W&L starters with a 41st and 53rd place finish, respectively. Haetzel shot a 6-over 78 on Sunday to finish the tournament at 9-over (75-78—153), while Cline shot a 5-over 77 for a two-shot improvement from her collegiate debut round.
  • Sophomore Alex Crews capped off the Generals in action this weekend. Competing individually, Crews shot 10-over (82) on Sunday with one birdie and 10 pars. Her final score of 17-over placed her 69th overall.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • After her record-tying 3-under 69 on Saturday, Wong's two-day score of 146 (+2) tied for the fourth-best 36-hole score in program history.
  • As a team, the Generals produced the third-best 36-hole team score (596) in program history. They shot a 293 on Saturday before a score of 303 on Sunday. It was three strokes short of tying the program's 36-hole scoring record, which was last accomplished at the 2023-24 MCC Women's Intercollegiate.
  • Wong hit a team-high 86 percent of fairways, followed by Bundy at 79 percent and Bhatt at 71 percent. Haetzel had a W&L-best 75 percent up-and-down success rate, with Bundy at 71 percent. Bhatt led the Generals on day two with 78 percent greens in regulation, and she also finished the tournament in the Top 5 for par-5 scoring (-2).
  • W&L ended the NCAA Preview ranking third in total pars with 116 and fifth in par-5 scoring.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will be back in action next weekend for the 2025 edition of the Montgomery Country Club Women's Intercollegiate in Montgomery, Ala. The 36-hole tournament will begin on Sunday, September 21.
