No. 9 Volleyball Sweeps Wilmington, Asbury on Opening Day

DANVILLE, Ky. - The ninth-ranked Washington and Lee University volleyball team kicked off the 2025 campaign with a pair of wins at the Colonel Invitational, sweeping Wilmington College and Asbury University in straight sets.


HOW IT HAPPENED vs WILMINGTON (W&L 3-0, 25-12, 25-17, 25-11)
  • The Generals (2-0) opened the match with a 3–1 run featuring kills from Riley Debiec and Emily Schellenberg, along with a service ace from Reese Gilla. An 11–2 run followed to break the first set wide open, highlighted by kills from Debiec, Emery Goerig, and Mitchener, who also recorded three service aces during the stretch. Additional kills from Caroline Natwick and Gilla, plus a Schellenberg ace, extended the lead to 18–6. Allison Young capped the set with a kill off an Addi Johnson assist, securing a 25–12 win in the opener.
  • The Quakers (0-1) responded early in the second set, taking a three-point lead behind a pair of kills and a W&L attacking error. The Generals answered with three straight points, including back-to-back kills from Debiec and a service ace from Vivi Vasquez. A 5–1 W&L run followed, highlighted by two Gilla kills, one from Debiec, and a block by Natwick and Gilla, giving the Blue and White an 8–6 advantage. The teams traded points the rest of the way until Mitchener sparked a three-point swing with a kill. A Wilmington service error and a Vasquez ace sealed the 25–21 set victory and a 2–0 match lead.
  • W&L started the third set strong with a 4–1 run, fueled by two Schellenberg kills and one from Natwick. The Quakers answered with a run of their own, tying the score at 4–4 with a block from Brinlee Preston and Sarah Brown, along with two W&L errors. From there, the Generals surged ahead with a dominant 13–2 run, featuring three service aces from Mitchener and Quiles, three Mitchener kills, and additional kills from Goerig and Debiec to build a 17–6 lead. The Blue and White closed out the sweep with four straight points, capped by kills from Madeline Sallee and Natwick, to secure their first win of the season.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Mitchener led all scorers with 10 kills on 22 attempts for a .364 hitting percentage. She also added a career-high five service aces, one block, and eight digs. Natwick and Debiec each tallied eight kills in the win, finishing with hitting percentages of .227 and .280, respectively. Sarah Brown led the Quakers with eight kills on 24 attempts for a .167 hitting percentage.
  • First-year Sienna Nicholson impressed in her debut, leading all players with 22 assists while adding five digs and one block. Kyra Frasier paced Wilmington with 12 assists and six digs.
  • Vasquez anchored the Generals' defense with a match-high 16 digs and added two service aces. Schellenberg joined her in double digits with 11 digs, while also contributing four kills and a service ace. For Wilmington, Logan McQuillin led the way with 13 digs.
 


HOW IT HAPPENED vs ASBURY (W&L 3-0, 25-12, 25-14, 25-22)
  • Both teams traded points early in the first set to remain tied at 3-3 before the Generals rattled off five unanswered points to take an 8-3 lead. The run featured two kills from Mitchener and one from Sienna Nicholson. The Eagles (0-1) closed the gap to three with back-to-back points, but W&L responded with a dominant 10-1 run to build a commanding 21-9 advantage. The stretch was highlighted by two Nicholson service aces and kills from Mitchener, Natwick, and Gilla. Two consecutive attacking errors by Asbury sealed a 25-12 first-set victory for the Generals.
  • The Blue and White carried their momentum into the second set, opening with an 8-2 run fueled by three kills and a solo block from Debiec. Back-to-back kills from Mitchener and Natwick extended the lead to 12-6, but the Eagles rallied with five unanswered points to cut the deficit to one. The Generals quickly regained control, answering with a 9-1 run behind kills from Goerig, Mitchener, and Debiec, along with two service aces from Quiles. Debiec capped off the set with a kill off a Nicholson assist, clinching a 25-14 win and a 2-0 match lead.
  • In the third set, W&L built a 5-2 lead behind two Mitchener kills and one from Natwick. Back-to-back kills from Mitchener and Debiec, along with a Mitchener service ace, pushed the advantage to 8-3. The teams traded points until Debiec delivered three straight kills to stretch the margin to 18-11. Mitchener later converted a Goerig assist to give the Generals a 24-18 lead, but the Eagles rallied with three straight points aided by W&L attacking errors to cut the deficit to two. The Blue and White secured their second win of the day on the next play, as Sidney Haysley's serve sailed out of bounds to seal the sweep.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Mitchener led all players with 17 kills on 43 attempts for a .256 hitting percentage, while adding 14 digs to record her first double-double of the season. Debiec followed with 11 kills on 26 attempts for a .269 hitting percentage.
  • First-year Sienna Nicholson posted a match- and career-high 27 assists in the win, along with two service aces and three digs. For the Eagles, Kate Lucy Gray and Beth Sara Gray each reached double-digit assists with 14 and 12, respectively.
  • On defense, Vasquez anchored the Generals with a match-high 21 digs and added one service ace. She is now just five digs away from surpassing Lindsay Ruckert for 15th on the program's all-time digs list.
W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals opened the season with a 2–0 record, remaining undefeated on opening day for the third straight season.
  • Sophomore Grace Mitchener powered the W&L offense with 27 kills on 65 attempts for a .292 hitting percentage. She also added six service aces and 22 digs across both wins. Senior Riley Debiec contributed 19 kills, while senior Caroline Natwick tallied 16—including a career-high eight kills in each match.
  • First-year Sienna Nicholson directed the offense with 49 assists, averaging 8.17 per set, while adding two service aces and eight digs.
  • On defense, junior Vivi Vasquez led the team with 37 digs, while also registering three service aces and five assists. At the net, first-year Reese Gilla and Debiec each recorded three blocks. Gilla also added three kills, eight digs, and a service.
