Gibson Set to Become Offensive Coordinator at Grinnell College

5/28/2025 11:25:00 AM

LEXINGTON, Va. - Washington and Lee head football coach Garrett LeRose '07 has announced that Malcolm Gibson has resigned as the Assistant football coach to become the Offensive Coordinator at Grinnell College.

"We are thankful for the impact Coach Gibson had on our program and know that he will have the same positive effect to his new program" said
LeRose. "We are excited to watch him continue to grow as a coach as he moves into this next chapter of his coaching career."

During his two years in Lexington, Gibson served as the running backs and wide receivers coach while also assisting with special teams coordination and execution. He helped lead the Generals to a 15–7 overall record, including an 11–3 mark in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play over the last two season. The Blue and White capped off their 2024 campaign with the first bowl victory in program history, defeating Wilkes University 40–21 in the Cape Henry Bowl.

The Generals' running game was consistently one of the top-five rushing offenses in Division III, ranking fourth nationally in each of the past two seasons. They averaged an impressive 293.5 rushing yards per game during the 2024 and have had eight games with over 300 rushing yards since 2023.

Under Gibson's direction, senior Jacob Romero produced back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons. In his senior year, Romero ranked 23rd in total rushing yards (1,123) and 29th in rushing yards per game (102.1) and was named the Most Valuable Player of the Cape Henry Bowl. Over the last two seasons, Gibson coached four All-ODAC selections, two All-Region honorees, and guided Anthony Crawford to ODAC Rookie of the Year honors in 2023.

A national search for a new assistant football coach will begin immediately.
