Evan Erb of the Washington and Lee men's tennis team fell by a 6-3, 6-2 score against Denison's Jacob Patterson on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Singles Championship.
Erb got off to a strong start, winning each of the first three games played. This included holding serve in the first game on a deuce point, before breaking Patterson's serve and holding once more. Patterson then held serve to get on the board before breaking Erb's serve on a deuce point to get back within a point.
After the changeover, Patterson proceeded to hold again to tie the score, before winning the next three games to take the first set. Patterson then opened the second set with a 3-0 lead, including a hold of serve on a deuce point in the third game of the set. Players then exchanged service holds over the next four games, with Patterson claiming another two deuce points for a 5-2 second-set lead.
The match then ended with Patterson breaking Erb's serve once more for the 6-3, 6-2 final. In total, Patterson won 4-of-5 deuce points on the day including 3-of-3 in the second set, all of which came during service games.
Erb rounds out his season with a 14-7 overall record in singles play, and he concludes his career at 63-25 in singles matches. He made two NCAA singles tournament appearances over his last three seasons and was a two-time ODAC Player of the Year.
