CLEVELAND — After a strong winter showing, Washington and Lee University ranks 14th in the updated LEARFIELD Directors' Cup Division III standings, compiling 469.50 total points through the fall and winter seasons. The Generals remain the highest-ranked institution in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), ahead of Lynchburg, which sits at 29th with 330.50 points.
Johns Hopkins leads Division III with 865.00 total points, while Washington and Lee was in third place following the fall standings with 343.5 points—an institutional best—before adding 126 points during the winter season.
Five W&L programs represented the Blue and White in NCAA postseason competition this winter. Women's Basketball reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament to collect 50 points. Men's Swimming had its best national finish since 2018, placing 19th overall and earning 55 points, while also collecting 11 All-America citations. Wrestling contributed 21 points, with four student-athletes qualifying for the NCAA Championship for the first time since the 70's. Additional national qualifications came from individual qualifiers in women's swimming and women's indoor track and field but did not produce any team score towards the cup's standings.
This winter, W&L teams posted a 57-32 overall record, highlighted by conference championships in women's indoor track and field, men's swimming, and women's swimming. The wrestling team posted a tournament-best 156 team points in the ODAC Individual Championships, while all winter teams have combined for a 29-14 record in league play.W&L's winter performance builds on a historic fall season in which five teams reached NCAA postseason play. Women's Cross Country earned a program-best 8th-place finish at nationals for 70.5 points, while Men's Cross Country recorded its highest-ever finish in 21st place, earning 53 points.
Through the winter, NYU is currently second with 727.00 points, followed by Emory in third (662.50), MIT in fourth (660.00), and Washington-St. Louis in fifth (627.00). The University Athletic Association (UAA) boasts three of its eight member schools in the top five, while the NESCAC has four institutions in the top 10: Middlebury (7th), Williams (8th), Amherst (9th), and Tufts (10th).
Since the Directors' Cup's inception in 1995-96, Washington and Lee has finished in the Top 50 on 17 occasions, including each of the last eight years the standings have been compiled.
The Directors' Cup awards points based on NCAA postseason success in up to 18 sports—with scoring split evenly between nine men's and nine women's sports. The Division III spring standings will begin distribution on Tuesday, June 10.
