Danforth Captures 157 Title at Averett’s Cougar Open

DANVILLE, Va. — Members of the Washington and Lee University wrestling team delivered a strong showing at the Cougar Open, hosted by Averett University on Sunday.

The Generals produced nine total placers, highlighted by a championship title from Noah Danforth (157) and podium finishes from Evan Owen (149), Jax Obe (149), Sam Tignor (184), Maxx Miller (197), Devin Sweeney (165) and Vitaly Cristo (133).

Danforth went 3–0 en route to the 157 crown, finishing the tournament with a dominant 16–1 tech fall in the title match. Owen advanced to the 149-pound championship bout behind a pin and tech fall before finishing runner-up.

Sophomore Jax Obe (149) recorded three tech falls in just 14:16, the most in the tournament, and tied for the second-highest single-match point total (21). Devin Sweeney (165) tied for the tournament lead in pins (3 in 11:45) while adding a tech fall to pace W&L in bonus-point victories. Evan Owen (149) led all W&L competitors in total team points with 19.5, while Vitaly Cristo (133) placed fifth with a decisive 17–2 tech fall to close his run.
