Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Seife nets late winner for W&L in ODAC Quarterfinals

LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year Sami Seife netted the game-winning goal in the 86th minute on Saturday to send the second-seeded Washington and Lee men's soccer team past seventh-seeded Randolph-Macon, 1-0, in the quarterfinal round of the ODAC Championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Generals (10-3-5) took a throw-in short in the Yellow Jackets' (8-6-4) defensive third, in similar range to where they had taken them long all game. Senior Buster Couhig got it in to junior Matthew Jenkins, who made a move past a defender before centering a pass into the box, where Seife met the ball for a header into the top-right corner of the goal.
  • Seife had two more key chances in the game, but had another header cleared off the line at the last second by an RMC defender in the 71st minute before having another shot saved in the 90th minute.
  • The Yellow Jackets looked to have one more rush at goal in the waning seconds of regulation, but the W&L defense held strong and did not allow a shot. Overall, RMC was held without a shot attempt over the final 22:20 of play.
  • Only eight shots occurred in the opening half of play, including six from the Generals, as both teams engaged in physical play throughout the early stages.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Seife's goal was his fourth of the season, and he tied for the team high in shots with three. Seife put all three of his attempts on goal.
  • Jenkins picked up his fourth assist of the season, as he, Couhig and sophomore Ricardo Sanchez joined Seife with three shot attempts apiece.
  • Senior Will Joseph was required to make three saves on the day to post his eighth shutout of the season and the 31st of his career.
  • Zach Richards and Damien Jackson led the RMC attack with two shots each. Goalkeeper Justin Chenoweth managed to make eight saves in the losing effort, six of which came in the second half.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Joseph's eighth shutout of the season marks the third time in his career that he has reached at least that many in a season. There have only been six other such occurrences in the history of the program.
  • Saturday's win went down as the ninth consecutive for the Generals in the all-time head-to-head against Randolph-Macon. W&L also holds a 18-1-2 record over the last 21 matchups against the Yellow Jackets.
TEAM STATS:
  • The Generals outshot the Yellow Jackets 6-2 in the first half and 11-5 in the second half for a 17-7 final advantage. There was also a 10-3 edge held by the hosts in shots on goal.
  • After just one corner kick in the first half (W&L), the Generals took four in the second half to three from RMC.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will host third-seeded Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday in the semifinal round of the ODAC Championship. The two teams met back on October 1 in a 1-1 draw in Lexington.
