FARMINGTON, Pa. – Sophomore
Berkeley Bundy tied the Washington and Lee women's golf program records for an 18-hole score (69) and score-to-par (-3) on Monday to lead the 11th-ranked Generals in the first round of the Tartan Invitational.
TEAM & INDIVIDUAL LEADERS THRU ROUND 1:
- Bundy's 3-under 69 places her in fourth place on the individual leaderboard through the first round. Only Emma Wong (Carnegie Mellon, -6), Sydney Richards (Southern Virginia, -6) and Athena Nguyen (Washington-St. Louis, -4) are ahead of Bundy.
- Collectively, the top-ranked Tartans lead through 18 holes at 5-under par (283). No. 5 NYU and No. 2 Emory are tied for second and one stroke off the lead, with No. 3 WashU in fourth at 2-under par.
- The Generals round out the Top 5 teams at 2-over par (290), and are six shots clear of No. 7 Randolph-Macon in sixth.
W&L ROUND 1 PLAYER SUMMARIES:
- Bundy started on the par-4 ninth hole and surged to 4-under par through eight holes to grab the individual lead. She then made par nine of the final 10 holes, with a bogey on No. 6 the lone blemish on an otherwise stellar round.
- First-year Mackenzie Cline shot 1-over (73) on Monday with three birdies to settle in 22nd place. Cline's round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole to help her shoot a 36 on the front nine.
- Junior Ella Wong and first-year Toral Bhatt are tied for 27th at 2-over (74) through the first round. Both players sank two birdies, with Bhatt logging 14 pars to 13 for Wong. Bhatt shot an even par (36) on the back nine and Wong was even on the front.
- Senior Julia Haetzel rounded out the W&L team scorers with a 4-over 76, which also included three birdies.
- Playing as an individual, sophomore Alex Crews joined Wong and Bhatt in a tie for 27th place after recording a 2-over score of 74. Crews matched Wong's scorecard with two birdies and 13 pars.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Bundy's 3-under 69 matches the program records for an 18-hole score and a single-round score to par. Wong most recently reached these feats in the first round of the NCAA Preview this season.
- Prior to this fall, a round of 3-under had only been accomplished once (Caroline Holloway) in program history, while a 69 had only been reached twice (Holloway, Haetzel).
- The team's 2-over score of 290 also tied program records for an 18-hole score and score-to-par. Those marks were set by the 2022-23 team during the second round of the MCC Intercollegiate.
- The Generals are currently second in the field in par-scoring (4.80) and third in par-4 scoring (4.10). They have the most pars (59) in the tournament so far and are one of four teams with an eagle (Cline).
- Bhatt is tied with Esther Jung (Emory) for the most pars in the field, with Bundy, Wong and Crews among seven players tied for third with 13. Bundy (4.50) and Cline (4.50) are tied for third in par-5 scoring.
