HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - A late interception by Senior Will Mahmud secured a 42-34 upset win for the Washington and Lee University football team at No. 21/24 Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Tigers (4-1, 2-1 ODAC) received the opening kickoff and marched down the field on a six-play, 68-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead. Quarterback Carter Sido connected with Kam Mahoney for a 23-yard touchdown to open the scoring.
- W&L (2-3, 2-1 ODAC) responded on their opening possession with an 11-play, 74-yard drive to tie the game at seven. Quarterback Ty Collins called his own number, taking it 14 yards into the end zone for his second rushing touchdown of the season.
- The Generals' defense forced a three-and-out on the Tigers' next possession, then took a 14-7 lead following a 10-play, 70-yard drive that ended with Anthony Crawford scoring from one yard out.
- W&L's defense stood tall again, forcing another three-and-out, which led to a third consecutive scoring drive. The Blue and White extended their lead to 21-7 after another 10-play, 69-yard drive, again capped off by a one-yard touchdown run from Crawford—his second of the game.
- Hampden-Sydney cut the lead to seven on their ensuing drive, as Joseph Gonzalez scored on a one yard rush. W&L answered immediately on their next possession as Collins hit a wide-open Teddy Sparrow for a 75-yard touchdown on the first play, restoring the two-score advantage at 28-14.
- The Tigers answered just before halftime with an 11-play, 80-yard drive, capped by a seven-yard rushing touchdown from Terry Hicks, making it 28-21 at the break.
- The Generals' offense came out hot in the second half, opening with a scoring drive to take a 35-21 lead. Crawford scored his third touchdown of the game with a seven-yard run up the middle.
- Hicks responded for Hampden-Sydney with a one-yard touchdown run of his own, finishing off a four-play, 43-yard drive to make it a seven-point game.
- W&L extended its lead to 42-28 on the next drive, as Crawford powered through defenders for his fourth touchdown of the game on a two-yard rush.
- Hampden-Sydney answered once again with a nine-play, 75-yard drive, which was finished off by a 19-yard touchdown run from Gonzalez. The Tigers attempted a two-point conversion but failed due to a penalty, keeping the score at 42-34 in favor of W&L.
- After a W&L punt, the Tigers advanced into the red zone, sparked by a 38-yard pass from Sido to Mason Cunningham. But on the next play, Sido was pressured by O'Keefe McKinney and his pass was intercepted by Will Mahmud, sealing the Generals' first win over a ranked opponent since 2021.
