LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's soccer team (14-2-1, 10-0-0 ODAC) rolled past Averett, 12-0, on Saturday afternoon to end the home slate and celebrate the senior class.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- W&L opened the scoring at 1:48 with a goal from senior Sarah Zimmerman. Just over 12 minutes later, senior Sydney Devory pushed the lead to 2-0, assisted by Elizabeth Zimmerman and Sarah Zimmerman. Keeping it in the family, Sarah Zimmerman struck again at 14:18 assisted by younger sister, Megan Zimmerman. Elizabeth Zimmerman added a goal assisted by Helen Otteni.
- Later in the first half, junior Stephanie Zawtocki scored with just over 20 minutes to go. Sophomore Aubrey Dunbar then found the net at with nine minutes in the half, and first-year Quincy Greene scoring next to send W&L into halftime with a 7-0 lead.
- In the second half, Abigail Watson extended the lead to 8-0 at just over 10 minutes into the half. At 23:35, Annelies Brenenborg scored for the second goal of the half, then Sydney Irwin added her own nearly two minutes later.
- Junior Gracie Jorgensen scored with 11 minutes to play, assisted by Greene, who closed out the scoring at nearly the 80th minute bringing the score to 12-0.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Greene and Sarah Zimmerman led the offense with two goals apiece, while Elizabeth Zimmerman also had two goal contributions on a goal and an assist.
- Irwin, Dunbar, Watson, Jorgensen, Brenenborg, Watson and Zawtocki all scored once each, while Otteni, junior Emily Burke, sophomores Maren Brown, Millie Rush and first-years McKenna Reh and Julia Espinosa all added one assist.
- All four W&L goalkeepers saw time in goal on Saturday, but the W&L defense held the Averett offense without a shot. Sophomore Kate McEnroe started and played 22:39, followed by senior Abby Groff (35:57), first-year Chrysi Gabriel (17:49) and junior Calla Andrews (13:35).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- With a bye on the final matchday of the season coming up, the Generals closed out a second consecutive perfect season in ODAC play. The team has won all 10 of its conference contests the last two seasons.
- The Generals' defense notched their 12th clean sheet of the season and their eighth straight. They have not allowed a goal in the last 754:01 of game time.
TEAM STATS:
- W&L out-shot the Cougars 48-0 (23 shots on goal). The final total came on 29 shots in the first half and 19 in the second half.
- The Generals also controlled set pieces. They recorded 15 corner kicks to just one for Averett.
UP NEXT:
The Generals entered Saturday having already secured the 2025 ODAC regular season championship and top seed for the conference tournament. The team will host the No. 8 seed next Saturday at a time to be determined. The ODAC office will announce the championship field following the conclusion of regular season games this coming week.
