Wrestling Claws Ferrum in Thursday Night ODAC Dual

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee University wrestling team improved to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in the ODAC with a 25-15 win over Ferrum College (8-4, 2-1 ODAC) on Thursday evening. The Generals posted wins in six of the 10 weight classes to claim the conference victory.

Ferrum opened the match with a technical fall at 125 pounds, as Zach Beckner (No. 2 in Region 4 / No. 9 Nationally) defeated Tony Urso, 18-1, in 6:45. The Panthers extended their lead to 8-0 after Trent Proctor (No. 7 in Region 4) edged Calvin Wiedemer in sudden victory at 133 pounds, 7-4.

Washington and Lee quickly rebounded, taking the next five bouts. Junior Isaiah Wilson started the streak with a dominant 21-7 major decision over Josiah Canales at 141 pounds. Evan Lindner (No. 1 in Region 4) followed with a 13-3 major decision at 149 pounds, defeating Cameron Curva (No. 8 in Region 4). Rookie William Flanagan continued the momentum at 157 pounds, scoring an 18-5 major decision over Joseph Olalde.

Mark Troni (No. 3 in Region 4) delivered another major decision for the Generals at 165 pounds, defeating Gabriel Cortes, 12-1. Jacob Wright (No. 8 in Region 4) capped the run with a commanding technical fall at 174 pounds, securing an 18-2 win over Avery Hall in 5:20 to give W&L a commanding lead.

Ferrum responded at 184 pounds, as Joseph Toner edged Evan Surmay in a 2-0 decision. However, John Santowski (No. 5 in Region 4) clinched the victory for W&L at 197 pounds with a 13-5 major decision over Sam Slate.

In the final bout of the night, Rayshawn Dixon (No. 1 in Region 4 / No. 2 Nationally) added points for Ferrum with a 12-4 major decision over first-year Carter Stack (No. 6 in Region 4) at 285 pounds, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Generals' advantage.

The Blue and White will travel across town next Thursday, January 23, at 7 p.m. against Southern Virginia in an ODAC matchup.
