Generals Go 2-1 on Opening Day of Budd Whitehill National Duals

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — The Washington and Lee University wrestling team opened competition at the Budd Whitehill National Duals on Friday, January 10, with a 2-1 record in the first day of action.

The Generals began the day with commanding wins, defeating Williams College, 29-15, and Oswego State, 36-11, in the first two sessions. In the evening, W&L fell to No. 5 Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 40-9, concluding the day's duals.

With the pair of victories in Group A, the Generals secured second place in their pod and advanced to the 5-8 bracket for Saturday's matches.

Individually, the team delivered a strong showing, totaling 218 match points and 74 team points. Carter Stack led the way, amassing 14 team points with one fall, a technical fall, and a decision victory. The first-year standout recorded a team-high 45 match points, including two wins over regionally ranked opponents.

Mark Troni also contributed significantly, adding 9 team points and 33 match points, the second-highest total on the team. Other notable performances came from John Santowski (10 team points), and Ben Rubin, Calvin Wiedemer, and Troni, each contributing 9 team points.

W&L's pod opponents were determined by the 4:30 p.m. bouts and will take on Messiah University at 10:30 a.m. The Generals are set to compete in the 5-8 bracket on Saturday, January 11, with matches on mats 3 and 4. The winners of Messiah vs W&L and Stevens vs Wilkes will battle for 5th place at 1:30 p.m. on mat 3 while mat 4 will feature the 7th-place dual.

Washington and Lee Wrestling Defeats Williams, 29-15

Washington and Lee University's wrestling team secured a 29-15 victory over Williams College in a dual meet. The Generals recorded three falls, with Skyler Hickman (141 pounds), John Santowski (197 pounds), and Carter Stack (285 pounds) earning pins. Ben Rubin (125 pounds) won by decision, while Evan Lindner (149 pounds) and Mark Troni (165 pounds) contributed major decision victories. Overall, Washington and Lee claimed seven individual wins to secure the team victory. Notably, Rubin, Lindner and Stack defeated Region 1-ranked opponents in their respective matches.

Washington and Lee Wrestling Defeats Oswego State, 36-11

Washington and Lee University's wrestling team wrestling team achieved a decisive 36-11 victory over Oswego State in a dual meet. The Generals secured three falls, courtesy of Ben Rubin (125 pounds), Jacob Wright (174 pounds), and John Santowski (197 pounds). Mark Troni (165 pounds) and Carter Stack (285 pounds) added technical falls, while Tharun Svetanant (149 pounds) earned a major decision. Calvin Wiedemer (133 pounds) contributed with a win by forfeit. Overall, Washington and Lee claimed victory in seven of the 10 bouts to secure the decisive team win.

Wisconsin-Eau Claire Tops Washington and Lee, 40-9

Washington and Lee University's wrestling team fell to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 40-9, in the final dual meet of Friday's 'A Group' schedule. The Generals secured wins at 133 pounds, 157 pounds, and 285 pounds. Regionally unranked Generals Calvin Wiedemer (133 pounds) and William Flanagan (157 pounds) each earned decision victories over opponents ranked in the top five of Region 7 in their respective weight classes. First-year standout Carter Stack (285 pounds) added another decision win, defeating Region 7's fifth-ranked Sloan Welch. Wisconsin-Eau Claire, a national powerhouse and the tournament's top-seed, dominated the matchup with five falls and two technical falls to secure the team victory.
