LEXINGTON, Va. - Hosting a rematch of the 2023 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship, the 23rd-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team swept Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday evening inside Holekamp Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs RANDOLPH-MACON (W&L, 3-0 | 25-12, 25-16, 25-20)
- Both teams battled early in the first set, staying within one point of each other before the Generals (14-0, 5-0 ODAC) rattled off six straight points to take a 12-5 lead. The run featured three kills from Grace Mitchener and a pair of service aces from Vivi Vasquez. After a Vasquez service error, the Blue and White went on a 9-1 run to extend their lead to 21-7, highlighted by kills from Emily Schellenberg, Mitchener, and Avery Myers. Riley Debiec closed out the set by finishing off a Vasquez assist, giving the Generals a 25-12.
- The Yellow Jackets (8-5, 4-1 ODAC) scored the first point of the second set, but the Blue and White responded with a six-point swing that included two kills from Myers and a Mitchener service ace. Four more unanswered points extended the Generals' lead to 10-4, with kills from Emery Goerig and Myers. W&L found themselves ahead 19-12 after a 6-2 run featuring kills from Schellenberg, Mitchener, and Myers, along with an Allie Buchholz service ace. Four consecutive points capped off a 25-16 set win as Mitchener recorded back-to-back kills, giving W&L a 2-0 lead.
- In the third set, back-to-back kills from Mitchener gave the Generals a 10-5 lead, but RMC responded with five straight points to tie the set at 10, featuring kills from Allison Lach, Kyle Wilhelmi, and Milly Mach. The Yellow Jackets stayed close throughout the set, keeping within two points of the Generals. However, consecutive kills from Myers secured the sixth straight sweep for W&L, giving the Blue and White a 25-20 set win.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Avery Myers led the offensive efforts with 14 kills on 39 attempts for a .308 hitting percentage, her third-best percentage this season. Myers also recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 14 digs in the win. Grace Mitchener followed closely behind with 12 kills and 14 digs, marking her tenth double-double of the season.
- Allie Buchholz dished out a match-high 35 assists, her ninth game this season with 30 or more assists.
- Maddy DeCandido of RMC led the match with 26 digs, while Vivi Vasquez dug out a team-high 16 attacks for the Generals. Vasquez, Mitchener, and Buchholz each registered two service aces, while RMC's Allison Lach posted a match-high three aces.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals extended their winning streak to 14 matches with the win, improving to 5-0 in ODAC play. The Blue and White secured their sixth consecutive sweep, they are one of just five remaining unbeaten teams in Division III this season.
- W&L led in every team category, recording eight service aces, four blocks, 38 assists, and 65 digs. The Generals tallied 39 kills on 122 attempts for a .260 hitting percentage, with a match-high .282 hitting percentage in the first set.
- Defensively, the Generals held the Yellow Jackets to a .126 hitting percentage, forcing 18 errors across the three sets. The Yellow Jackets struggled in the first set, recording a match-low .025 hitting percentage.

- The 23rd-ranked Generals will head north on I-81 to Winchester, Va., for the Shenandoah University Tri-match on Saturday. The Blue and White will face the Hornets at 11 a.m. before taking on the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg at 1 p.m.
