Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Brown leads the charge for W&L in dominant win over Berry (Ga.)

LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year Maren Brown recorded a hat trick on Saturday afternoon to highlight the Washington and Lee women's soccer team's 8-0 victory over Berry (Ga.).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
It was a dominating performance on both ends of the field for the Generals (3-1), who opened the scoring 12:05 into the game on an Amelia Manke goal from junior Sarah Zimmerman. Brown then logged her first goal of the afternoon in the 31st minute, followed by her second score just 1:36 later to put W&L up, 3-0, at 31:40.

The Generals went on to score five more times in the second half, including three goals in an 8:10 span starting in the 53rd minute. Junior Sophie Berman got on the board first in the second half, preceding an Ann Riley Huber goal in the 59th minute and Brown's third goal of the day 2:21 later.

Junior Sydney Devory assisted on Brown's third goal, and she did so again in the 83rd minute on an Aubrey Dunbar goal. Senior Sarah Lathrop put the finishing touches on the eight-goal win in the 89th minute with her first goal of the season, coming off a cross from junior Helen Otteni.

While the offense possessed the ball for a vast majority of the game, the W&L defense remained alert and wise to any potential threats from the Vikings' offense. The Generals' backline allowed just two shots in the first half and none in the second half to claim their third consecutive shutout.

TOP PERFORMERS:
Brown's three goals were her first three of the season, Huber netted her second of the year and Berman, Dunbar, Lathrop and Manke all posted their first of the season. Devory finished with a team-best two assists, with Zimmerman, Berman, Otteni and first-year Alex Rees all collecting a helper as well.

Junior Abby Groff and first-year Kate McEnroe shared the shutout in goal for W&L. Groff played the first half, McEnroe played the second and neither were required to make a save. The W&L defense has still allowed just one goal this season and none over the last 352:42.

Maggie Jones played the first 68:17 in goal for the Vikings and made 11 saves, but was tagged for six goals allowed. Lily Osterkamp covered the final 21:43 and made one save.

NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
Brown's hat trick was the first for a W&L women's soccer player since Caroline Bailey '19 scored three times in a 10-0 win over Hollins on October 20, 2018. It was also the first hat trick against a nonconference team since Megan Engeland '19 did so against Averett on September 17, 2017.

TEAM STATS:
The Blue and White finished the day with a 36-2 advantage in total shots, including 20-0 after halftime. W&L also earned seven corner kicks in the game and surrendered two.
