Evan Lindner Qualifies for Nationals, Generals Take Fifth at Southeast Regionals

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Washington and Lee University wrestling team completed the final day of the NCAA Division III Southeast Regional Wrestling Championships at Lycoming College on Saturday.

The W&L results were headlined by a second-place finish, and national qualification, for sophomore Evan Lindner. 
Lindner suffered his only loss of the tournament in the 149 first place match to Taylor Smith from Washington & Jefferson, who is ranked fifth in the region's weight class.

The Generals took fifth place as a team with 102 points and placed seven wrestlers on the podium. 

Stevens won the team title with 164.5 points followed by Averett (146.5) and Roanoke College (145.5) separated by a single point. 

PODIUM FINISHERS

  • Evan Lindner (149 weight class) posted a 3-1 record and took second place.
    • The sophomore scored 19.0 team points for W&L. 
    • Linder advanced to the semifinals with a 5-3 decision over Averett's Jesse Alvarado. 
    • In the finals match, Lindner fell 9-2 and all points were scored in the second and third period. Lindner posted a pair of escapes but was unable to overcome Smith's offensive takedowns and reversal points.
  • David Rubin (125 weight class) wrestled into the 7th place match against Delaware Valley's Malik Asfour and fell in a major decision (MD 13-5). 
  • In the fifth place match, Nic Zamaloff (157 weight class) downed Marymount's Tallion Elliott with an 19-2 technical fall.
    • Zamaloff finished with a 5-2 record and tallied 15 team points with a final record of 5-2. 
  • In the 165 weight class, Mark Troni placed fifth and scored 16.5 team points for the Generals.
    • In the fifth place match Troni marked a 10-2 major decision victory over Messiah's Clay Gainer to finish with a 5-2 weekend record.
  • Jack McCusker placed eighth in the 184 weight class and scored 8.5 team points.
  • John Santowski (197 weight class) wrapped up the tournament with the second win of the weekend over Stevens' Blaise Wagner with a 9-3 decision to take fifth place. 
    • Santowski finished 3-2 and scored 11.5 team points.
  • In the 285 class, John Ryan Sedovy fell to Wilkes' Caleb Burkhart for the second time in the 24-hour span. 
    • Sedovy finished with a 4-2 record and scored 12.5 team points to finish 4th on the podium.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • The Generals recorded five pins and 10 technical falls over the two days. 

  • Jack McCusker has the largest seed-place differential for the Generals. The junior was seeded 24th after spending a majority of 2024 injured, and finished 8th.
  • W&L scored the second-most total match points with 379 points, seven points in front of Roanoke College. 
  • Averett's George Mosley scored the most pins with four in a time of 11:07 and a tournament-best 28 points. 
  • Greensboro's Josh Wilson was named Most Outstanding Wrestler 
  • Roanokes Nate Yetzer and staff were named Coach of the Year and Coaching Staff/Assistant Coaches of the year, respectively.

Evan Linder and the top three placers in each weight class will earn automatic bids to the NCAA Division III Championships March 11-12 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
