Men's Golf Finishes in Fourth at Tiger Invite

NORTH-PINEHURST, N.C. - The sixth-ranked Washington and Lee University men's golf team maintained their fourth place status at the Tiger Invitational, hosted by Hampden-Sydney College, at the Forest Creek Golf Club on Monday. 

The Generals combined for a card of 294-302--596 (+20) on the par 72 course. 

Individually, Jonathan McEwen maintained fifth place after a four-way tie for first place. Avery Stansell (Rhodes) Nick Rubino (Hampden-Sydney), Cole Humphrey (Huntingdon) and Jack Burr (Huntingdon) all tied for the top position at the tournament with a final score of two under par.

McEwen carded pars on both the first and second rounds to finish even in scoring, good for the second-best score on the player's leaderboard. 

No. 15 Huntingdon College (288-295--583, +7), No. 1 Methodist (293-296--589, +13) and No. 7 Carnegie Mellon (290-301--591, +15) finished ahead of the Blue and White with MU and CMU swapping positions from the first round.

  • Place: T5
  • Birdies: Six
  • Par: 24
  • McEwen scored the second-lowest 36-hole score of the tournament, two strokes behind the four-way tie for first place. 

Will Braxton (74-76, +7)

  • Place:  T28
  • Birdies: One
  • Par: 12
  • Braxton's first round score sheet tallied 16 pars and was tied for the most of the 90 individuals in the round. 
  • Braxton carded 28 total pars, third most of the tournament behind Averett's Caleb Kimbrough (30) and Logan Johnson's (Sewanee) 29 pars.

Walker McPhail (72-80, +8)

  • Place: T35
  • Birdies: Four
  • Par: 21

Cannon Crane (76-77 +9)

  • Place: T42
  • Birdies: Five
  • Par: 20

Elias Malakoff (79-76, +11)

  • Place: T53
  • Birdies: Three
  • Par: 22
  • Malakoff was the only General to improve the round's score from day one to day two. 

TOURNAMENT BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Blue and White recorded 115 pars, the most of any team at the tournament, and totaled 19 birdies. 
  • W&L averaged a score of 3.23 strokes on par 3s (+9), 4.3 (+30) strokes on par 4s and 4.90 strokes on par 5s (-4). 
  • Crane and McEwen finished two under on par 5s and Walker McPhail finished one stroke behind the pair. 

BY THE NUMBERS | ROUND ONE

  • W&L averaged a score of 3.25 strokes on par 3s, 4.24 strokes on par 4s and 4.80 strokes on par 5s. 
  • The Generals led all teams with 58 holes played to par and recorded 12 birdies.
