Seven Generals Advance to Second Day of Regional Wrestling Tournament

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - The Washington and Lee University wrestling team completed the first day of the NCAA Division III Southeast Regional Wrestling Championships at Lycoming College on Friday. 

The Generals have a pair of sophomores still active in the Championship bracket in the 149 and 197 weight classes, Evan Lindner and John Santowski, respectively. 

W&L also has five wrestlers battling through the consolation bracket and will continue competition tomorrow with the consolation quarterfinals at 10 a.m. in hopes of earning a bid to the NCAA National Championships bracket.

CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKET
  • Evan Lindner (149 weight class) received a bye in the first round then posted a pair of technical falls over Messiah's Noah Rice and Southern Virginia's Elijah Blackwell. 
  • In the semifinals, Lindner will take on Jesse Alvarado from Averett. 
  • John Santowski (197 weight class) received a bye in the championship's opening round. The sophomore won a 4-1 decision over Seth Phillips from Thiel then took down Stevens' Blaise Wagner by a 2-1 decision in the quarterfinals.
  • In the semifinals, Santowski will take on Cameron Butka of Wilkes. 

CONSOLATION BRACKET

  • David Rubin (125 weight class) fell in the quarterfinals to nationally-ranked Mac Cafurello (Ronaoke) but followed up the loss with a pin over Anakin Burks (Shenandoah) in the consolation bracket (round 4). 
  • Nic Zamaloff (157 weight class) started the day off with a pair of wins before falling in the quarterfinals to Wilkes' Jaryn Hartranft (MD 12-4). Zamaloff then responded by pinning Cannon Long (Shenandoah) in 2:27 to advance in the consolation bracket. 
  • Mark Troni (165 weight class) finished day one with a record of 3-1 with wins by fall, technical fall and decision. Troni earned a technical fall in the consolation round 4 bout with Shenandoah's Jalen Cornelius. 
  • Jack McCusker (184 weight class) won his first two matches of the day starting with a pin in under a minute. After falling in the championship quarterfinals, McCusker won by major decision (14-5) over Jessie Orbin of Waynesburg in the fourth round of consolation bouts.
  • John Ryan Sedovy (285 weight class) fell in the quarterfinals and advanced to the consolation quarterfinals tomorrow after posting a 2-1 sudden victory win over Marymount's Brey Loving. 
FINAL RESULTS
  • Trey Custodio (133 weight class) finished with a record of 2-2 and earned a pair of wins by tech fall in the second and third rounds of the consolation bracket and tallied 4.5 team points for the Generals. 
  • Skyler Hickman (141 weight class) won his first two championship round matches by tech fall then major decision. The first-year then fell to second-ranked Josh Wilson (Greensboro) and Ryan Kelly (Delawear Valley) by decision scores. Hickman scored 4.5 team points in his rookie campaign. 
  • Jak Krouse (174 weight class) finished with a 2-2 record and won by tech fall over King's Nick Costello and then by decision over Marymount's Mohammed Fofana to score 2.5 team points. 

UP NEXT: 
W&L sits in fifth place in team scoring with 73.5 points. Ahead of the Generals is Stevens Institute of Technology (98), Roanoke (96), Delaware Valley (91), and Averett (87.5).
